Exactly Bob. All they are is a nice place for a water puddle, or snow to sit
and melt, and drip.. drip.. drip thru any hint of a worn O-ring. Useless to
grab when you're slipping off the float step fueling as well..... ;O)

A closeup of my snorkel tubes is at http://n254mr.com/node/746 I cut the
short, larger diameter outer end tube at a slant leaning forward (going up)
which keeps the rain out on the ground. Others have rotated that outer end
piece 180 deg. so the slant leans the other way, which also keep water out
on the ground, and probably provides better ram air pressure in flight.
I've never had water in the tanks, even through heavy rain on the ground,
and moderate in flight.

Notice that either way, the main, smaller diameter tube has a squared off
end inside the larger diameter but shorter end piece. That means that even
if you have horizontal wind, the raindrops still have to climb up and over
that edge, or lip, inside too. :-)
