Hi Mike !

The 160 hp version is not suitable for mogas - that's one reason why most
here prefer the 150 hp !

In Canada, Shell is the only company that has comitted to NOT use
ethanol in it's premium gas -- years ago, we found Shell Gold was the
best gas for the Rotax 912 -- I believe it still is !

In any case, with any new engine, you should run 100 LL for at least
a couple of hundred hours to let the lead soak into the metal for
lubrication ... or you could end up with "spot-welded" valve seats !

A lot of people have substituted the word "MOGAS" for "AUTO-GAS" and now
consider them to be the same thing---NOT SO.

Auto gas is a blend of so many additives it is almost useless as a cleaning
solvent any more!

A few old engines out their were approved for 73 octane. A lot of engines
were approved for 80/87. The high compression engines were built to use
100/130 or 100LL.

If you do try to use the auto type fuels at least check the engine
requirement. Or risk a failure from detonation.

I don't believe the 160 HP is suitable for mogas. You might check the STC
list for certified aircraft to see if any with your engine have been STC'ed.
Others here may have a better answer on the engine.

In any case, if you elect to use mogas I suggest you test every load for
alchohol. I have found stations here in South Carolina with no "alchohol
sticker" that did have alchohol. The best tester I've found is the EAA unit
and the test is simple. As an alternate the test can be done with any small
relatively tall clear container, and a little water.

Auto fuel composition changes at least twice a year with the weather. Don't
use winter grade in the summer as the high temps can lead to vapor lock.
Mogas allowable vapor pressure is much higher than 100LL. Ralph Baker

Just to offer another opinion....

If your engine is a clone from Superior and ECI, it is approved for 91
mogas. I think just recently even Lycoming has approved mogas, but with
impractical caveats to keep with their longstanding CYA. No one approves
ethanol, though, AFAIK.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that Rotax prefers mogas over avgas for
their engines, not to mention all the auto engines, Subarus, etc. I am sure
their engine tolerances are a lot tighter than Lycoming. Also, have to
remember that if you run a fixed pitch prop that your manifold pressures are
less, especially if you have a climb prop.

I have run mogas most of the time in my Rebel. It still gets avgas from time
to time, when on trips, and when I broke in the engine. Also, during the
winter, I use avgas, as I don't fly as frequently then.

From the research I have done, and heard from long time users, is that mogas
makes for a cleaner engine, especially plugs, and you have less valve
sticking issues, resulting in fewer valve failures.
