[rebel-builders] Rebel tail strut fork ends - IMPORTANT !!!

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

I guess there's always the chance a piece got stress cracked during
machining... BUT.. I've taken care/rebuilt of a LOT of wrecked Rebels in the
last 15 years. I've seen the strut tube broken completely.. I've seen the
strut fitting pulled out of the tube by shearing the rivets (with the tube
and fitting still in tact). I've seen the fitting ripped out with the first
rivet shearing the tube and the second rivet shearing clean, again no damage
to the fitting itself. I've seen the fitting bent and still bolted to the
stab fitting. I've never seen the AN3 bolt break or the fitting forks
themselves break.

Looking at the AD picture there's a lot of interesting "tracks" on the strut
in question and it's paint.

Don't anyone get to wrapped up and concerned about the fittings you have on
your Rebel. Have a look for any "bow in" while tightening and look for any
machining stress risers before assembly and buff any out you see. Any I have
worked on have just enough clearance in the forks to fit the stab fitting.
If yours have a lot of "daylight", then I suggest they were machined wrong.

[rebel-builders] Rebel tail strut fork ends - IMPORTANT !!!

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

Just received a picture from Nig of the second broken fork from about 3 days
ago. It is broken on the exact same angle as the one shown in the AD picture
Bob supplied. Also noted is the fork has a solid impression of the washer
embedded in it suggesting it was really cranked down tight. I'm not even
sure how you get an AN3 bolt that tight without it snapping. The fork break
looks very granular in nature leading me to beleive.. from a picture... that
it had been cracked for some time and started to corrode. I'm wondering if
the stab fitting is bottoming into the fork fitting making it rigid vs being
able to rotate on the attachment bolt during severe flexing. All I know for
sure is that I'll be out with a light and a magnifying glass on the three
Rebels I have on site here today!

I have uploaded the photo to our website so you can view it as well for
comparison and so you know where to look on your own machine.

[rebel-builders] Rebel tail strut fork ends - IMPORTANT !!!

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

Just took mine apart and checked them. Everything is still as snug and solid
as when first installed, and no signs of any cracking.

Sure would like to know more about how two in the UK could have the same
problem. I don't think there are that many Rebels there.

I wonder if they were installed without proper alignment of the bottom
flange that attaches to the tail. If that is turned the wrong way, it would
cause a pretty severe bending stress on the forks. But can't see a builder
doing that without noticing....

I cleaned and inspected all of mine today with a "fine tooth comb". No

Okay.. so attachement at the "man made" end (vs factory made stab attach).
Maybe they have an interference issue.. the attachment angle hasn't been
relieved enough and is bottoming in the fork just as the bolt makes the
hole. Or a bad tail spring set up with a lot of movement working the
angle/fork fitting. Maybe I should jump on a pressurized can and come check
it out in person. I could use a pint of 6X from a good UK pub !!

Hi Wayne (and all)

The fork that broke was the lower end (fuselage end) on this latest one.
I'm
trying to find out more about the original event.

Aircraft was a 235 powered one so not excessive power as a cause.

Just took mine apart and checked them. Everything is still as snug and
solid
as when first installed, and no signs of any cracking.

Sure would like to know more about how two in the UK could have the same
problem. I don't think there are that many Rebels there.

I wonder if they were installed without proper alignment of the bottom
flange that attaches to the tail. If that is turned the wrong way, it
would
cause a pretty severe bending stress on the forks. But can't see a
builder
doing that without noticing....

Just received a picture from Nig of the second broken fork from about 3
days

ago. It is broken on the exact same angle as the one shown in the AD
picture

Bob supplied. Also noted is the fork has a solid impression of the washer
embedded in it suggesting it was really cranked down tight. I'm not even
sure how you get an AN3 bolt that tight without it snapping. The fork
break
looks very granular in nature leading me to beleive.. from a picture...
that

it had been cracked for some time and started to corrode. I'm wondering
if
the stab fitting is bottoming into the fork fitting making it rigid vs
being

able to rotate on the attachment bolt during severe flexing. All I know
for
sure is that I'll be out with a light and a magnifying glass on the three
Rebels I have on site here today!

I have uploaded the photo to our website so you can view it as well for
comparison and so you know where to look on your own machine.

[rebel-builders] Rebel tail strut fork ends - IMPORTANT !!!

Post by N.Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

Hi Wayne (and all)

The fork that broke was the lower end (fuselage end) on this latest one. I'm
trying to find out more about the original event.

Aircraft was a 235 powered one so not excessive power as a cause.

Also curious... Nigel is it the upper attachement at the stab or the lower
attachement at the tailspring angle that broke on these two UK birds??

I cleaned and inspected all of mine today with a "fine tooth comb". No
issues.

I guess there's always the chance a piece got stress cracked during
machining... BUT.. I've taken care/rebuilt of a LOT of wrecked Rebels in
the
last 15 years. I've seen the strut tube broken completely.. I've seen
the
strut fitting pulled out of the tube by shearing the rivets (with the
tube
and fitting still in tact). I've seen the fitting ripped out with the
first
rivet shearing the tube and the second rivet shearing clean, again no
damage
to the fitting itself. I've seen the fitting bent and still bolted to
the
stab fitting. I've never seen the AN3 bolt break or the fitting forks
themselves break.

Looking at the AD picture there's a lot of interesting "tracks" on the
strut
in question and it's paint.

Don't anyone get to wrapped up and concerned about the fittings you have
on
your Rebel. Have a look for any "bow in" while tightening and look for
any
machining stress risers before assembly and buff any out you see. Any I
have
worked on have just enough clearance in the forks to fit the stab
fitting.
If yours have a lot of "daylight", then I suggest they were machined
wrong.

[rebel-builders] Rebel tail strut fork ends - IMPORTANT !!!

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

Okay.. so attachement at the "man made" end (vs factory made stab attach).

[rebel-builders] Rebel tail strut fork ends - IMPORTANT !!!

Post by Terry Dazey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

I have been getting repeats for several days now and another 50 or so this morning.

I had an interference issue there and had to take out some additional
material from the angle. I can see how that could be a common occurance
since it is up to the builder to make that part and I have also noticed
that side to side rocking of the fuselage will cause that whole assembly to
flex laterally. If the angle was in contact with the inner surface of the
strut fork, that might cause a failure. I'm not sure how to stop that
lateral flex. I was considering remaking the fittings that bolt to the side
of the fin post (ts 3?) Out of steel.
