seats again

I'm looking at making Rebel seats and see recommendations from at least Bob
P that the seat bottom should be 6-8", uncompressed. This could be 1" each
of the three densities of Confor Foam, on top of a 3" base of something less
expensive. Anyone have suggestions for what that underlying base could be
made from? I'm surprised Hitech (seatfoam.com -- ConforFoam sheet
suppler) recommends polystyrene, considering its flammability.

We used Conforfoam from Jim Fixx at Fixx props. He is usually at Sun & Fun. While it is expensive I would not hesitate to use it again. Remember, the seat is the one piece of equipment you use whenever you are in the plane. The layers of Conforfoam can be glued together but be sure to encase the Conforfoam in some fabric like a high count muslin before upholstering it. The idea is to minimize chafing between the Conforfoam and the cover.

I have put it in my motorcycle seats for the increased long term comfort. Don't be put off by how firm it is when cold.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm dangerous enf to go on this. I've also
found an upholstery shop very close -- good for wherever I need to punt.
Guess I'll go more like the 3-4" stack instead of taller, and this avoids my
previous question as to how to make the first 3" out of something cheaper.
