[rebel-builders] Flaperon rigging?

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:07 pm

Hi Tom !

Not sure how you are getting so much travel !
I think the -20 to +35 is the AILERON travel ...

Most have found that, with about 115 or more HP,
you can pull 2 notches of reflex ... each 'notch' is 6 degrees ...

This gives 12 degrees max. negative flap, and 6, 12, and
18 degrees of down flap. 18 degrees down IS THE MAXIMUM !!!
More than that and you might lose the flaps one day !!!!!!
**NOTE - this applies to the Rebel split flaps too !! **

You should not quite be hitting the stops on the flapperon
mixer arm travel. The teleflex cable will control the distance.
Is your cable fastened in front of the pushrods, or behind ??
.... It should be behind the pivot bolt.

While you are at it, it will make life a lot easier if you change
the straight bar flap handle to one that is a dogleg, with
about 70 degrees forward bend at the half way point.
It's easier to pull down, and it's right forward, up out of the
way when in reflex.

I'm trying to adjust the Flaperon travel from neutral to full flaps -
instructions say -20 to +35 - and I do get 55 degrees of overall travel,
but don't know if that's max/max deflection. If we are to have 5 degrees
negative flap, when mixer arm is set at 7/8" lower than hi-stop - what
should be the nominal full flap deflection at mixer arm low stop?

Presently when adjusted to -5 degrees at mixer arm hi-stop I get ~ 50
degrees of down flap at low mixer arm stop - that's way too much as the
control column locks up because of over center of the Flaperon control
horns.

Haven't figured out how to adjust this much Flaperon travel out of mixer
arm.

Any suggestions?

[rebel-builders] Flaperon rigging?

Post by Tom Anderson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:07 pm

Bob - Thanks very much for the response and pictures - it explains
everything. In looking at the pictures the problem is the amount of travel
I built into the mixer arm between stops - I made them so the Flaperon would
travel between
-20 to +35 per the instructions in the wing build section. It seems the max
mixer arm travel should not exceed 1.75 to 2 inches.
I do have a linear actuator from Motion Industries in lieu of the flex
cable. The linear actuator has a 1.5 inch travel and is presently mounted
to give me 'full' Flaperon deflection. So with your information I will
remake the mixer arm stops and reposition the linear actuator such that the
Max Flaperon travel is from -10 to +15 - that way I'll be able to adjust
with the rod ends the actual desired limits.

Again Thanks very much for the information!
