My plane recently suffered wind damage to the torque tube hanger. The
single channel between bulkheads broke, pushing the roof attach through the
roof skin. I am planning to repair it using the newer, 2-channel support.
Thinking of still using the roof support(after patching the roof in and out),
and perhaps adding an angle support to the outboard wing rib. Any better
ideas?

When I built my rebel I didn't notice the slight curve to the cabin roof
and rivetted the channel to the roof before noticing something wasn't
right. So I drilled it off and added small tabs all the way along to fill
in the holes. It may be a little bit stronger because of it. I think making
a rib that follows the roof line would be a good solution. Using gust locks
at both ends of the flaperons when parked outside should prevent any damage
in the future.

My torque tube hanger is not attached to the roof -- which doesn't seem like
a good idea to me. It does have dual .032 (ST-28) channels forming an
I-Beam, with a couple 1/8" fillers (which aided construction) and triangle
gussets to the bulkheads. Haven't had it out on a battering-ram-wind day
yet, but I do think it's built like a (light?) tank. Lots of photos and
descriptions at http://n254mr.com -- search for "torque tube" and "hanger"
and you'll get it all.

I think the earlier manual called for riveting to the roof. Then they came
up with the new, doubled channels w/ gussets install. I think it was a good
idea. The .020 roof is already so thin that the curves in the lexan
(probably from being rolled up for 25 yrs) were stronger than the roof skin!
For that reason I'll be glad to get on amphibs where the roof isn't quite so
visible.

[rebel-builders] Flaperon torque tube hanger

Post by Bob Palmer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:19 pm

The is not much curve in the roof so you can make a pretty good rib for the
cabin roof with a couple of pieces of 3/4" plywood. Cut them to the same
shape as the rib you want then sandwich a piece of 020 in between. Use a
couple of drywall screws to hold them together (right through the 020 so it
is prevented from moving) place the whole thing in a vice, trim the corners
and then flatten the flanges down using a 2X4 and mallet. Drill out the
holes from the drywall screws to clean them up and fluting pliers will
straighten out the top flange.

[rebel-builders] Flaperon torque tube hanger

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:19 pm

Check your rod ends really closely Mitch ....while you are into the repair.
Had a Rebel grounded, in Collingwood, Ontario, over Easter weekend thanks to
a tailwind wapping the flaperons back and forth when a cold front blasted
thru for about 3 minutes! Bent the control horns etc..as well. Lucky for
Mark I was home and had what he needed in the shop to get him back airborne
the next day...with new rod ends and a set of horns cut to fit the tube
radius that he could bolt/rivet in place to restore straightness and
strength to his bent ones.

Doesn't matter how strong you make that hangar... if you don't use control
locks between the flaperon and the cabin filler/transition you are going to
get bit by this sooner or later. A good gust of wind banging the flaperons
full travel each way WILL bend/break your HM4M rod ends.

I don't know how far this goes back into the archives.. but way.. way.. way
back it was suggested by myself and others to make the channel out of
minimum .032. Still hooking into the roof and using bolts instead of rivets.
I went searching for pics... Roger uploaded some nice ones back in 2004 of
the double channel and joining strap that would work good for you as well.
They are in .. Files... Rebel.. Control Systems..

As has been also mentioned it's easy to make a rib to fit the contour of the
roof. Many Rebel's out there have this, that just got an extra centre cabin
roof rib from MAM with their kit... but easy to make around a form as noted
by Bob Palmer.

I think that since my roof is going to be 3 layers thick now, that the
attachment to the roof may be good. The double channel has to be a stronger
system. I saw an angle brace from the channel to the wing root, on an Elite
that is under construction (it has a single channel which is contoured to
the roof line and riveted along it's length).
Checked out your photos, thanks.

Thanks. I will be checking everything during the repair.
Gust locks will be installed from now on, also for the elevator and rudder.
The aircraft was parked with the stick tied back with the seatbelt, but the
winds were gusting to near 90 km/h for quite a while.

Hi Terry
The other Elite in the UK suffered similar damage a couple of years ago
while parked up... again, no control locks in place.
I've made a set for mine using old CD's and some model aircraft EDF foam,
some fence post eye bolts with nuts and washers. Couple of dollars per lock
and a larger surface area than the commercially bought round ones. (3 CD's
stuck together per side, 6 per lock seems to be strong enough :-)

[rebel-builders] Flaperon torque tube hanger

Post by Jay Yau » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:19 pm

I bled the brake fluid twice, still found the same amount of air bubble in the nylon tube (about 1.5 inches long of the air bubble).

I am pretty sure that I have pumped the fluid from the bottom up all the way though with a pump I bought from aircraft spruce (pump the fluid into the bleeder nipple and drain out of of reservor on the top). But after settled down for while, still see air bubble in the tube.

Any one has similar problem?

Should I flush the fluid the other way around, from top to the bottom?

Jay

Jay any high point in the hydraulic line will trap air (like an inverted U).
Unless you can send a big enough volume of fluid through the problem will
not go away. Is their anything you can do to re-rout the lines to NOT have
a high spot?
The best way to move air out is from low point to high point as you are
trying to do.
