SR to Australia

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm

Hi everyone. I've been off the list for a while building my new life in
Australia after 12 years in Alaska. I flew my Super Rebel down to Denver
from Fairbanks with two friends. It was the first time I had three people
and a bunch of gear in the plane and was, by far, the longest cross country
flight I have done in it, with only about 60 hours TT since I received my
Airworthiness Certificate. I was quite surprised at how different it behaved
with extra weight on board. One thing I quickly learned was that it is
essential to have a bit of flap in for takeoff. I often had no flaps set
when solo and it made little difference. But the plane would literally not
get airborne without flaps with the extra weight. Made for one very exciting
takeoff from Northway when I forgot the flaps for takeoff. Checklists are
important!

I've investigated the cost to get my plane down under and it's pretty
expensive. The scary part is the duty and taxes because I can't predict how
much that will be because I don't know how much customs will value the plane
at. At 5% duty and 10% tax, even if they undervalue it significantly, it
adds up. Unbelievably, you are taxed on the duty and the cost for shipping
as well.

Anyway, the bottom line is, and I apologize for using the forum for this
announcement, but the plane is for sale at what I believe is a ridiculously
low price for a flying Super Rebel, even with the few remaining
(non-grounding) issues to work through. If anyone on the list knows anyone
in the market, I could really use the help. Better yet, if anyone knows how
to get an airplane to Australia at a reasonable cost, let me know because
I'd rather do that!

You can check out the ad on Barnstormers under Experimental/Murphy. Just so
you know, $69K or $50K minus firewall forward (for those who have concerns
about the Chevy engine).
