Windshield Protector

Hi,
My windshield has been sitting around a long time. It has plastic
film on both sides to protect it but it is mostly falling off. I've
seen some that looked like they had some sort of sprayed on coating on
them. Anyone know what that is? I'd like to remove the film
completely and coat it with something before I start the fitting
process. Thanks,
