Japanese Starters, was Re: More on batteries

Post by David Ricker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Guys

Are there any important issues with mixing (presumably) metric sized gear forms (on the
starter) and inch versions (on the flywheels)? In the worst case I would be concerned
about uneven wear caused by a poor mesh match.

How has this worked out in practice? The idea of mounting a readily availible, easily
rebuildable high power/low weight gear reduction starter is quite attractive.

old EAA experimenter so maybe your local chapter can help you. As I
remember you have to count the teeth on your ring gear if it's about 120
you can use any toyota starter with 9 teeth and if it's about 140 you need
a starter with 11 teeth all the toyota starters are pretty much the same
and are almost universally exchangable. The other nice thing about the
toyota is the gear is cantilevered so you don't need to put a bump in your
nosebowl.

cheaper than a aluminum angle to mount it as the bolt holes on the toyota starter are on
the end. The whole unit weighs 9lb.

Dave The gears on my starter mesh very well the pitch is almost exactly the
same. I've heard that one of the lightweight starter makers uses the guts
from a japanese starter in their own casing.

Sounds like one more thing to put on the "to do" list. I haven't gotten that far up the
learning curve on aero engines & accessories but this sounds like a natural for weight &
cost savings not to mention simplified service. Looks like all that time under the hood
of my Toyotas will pay off here too!
