Super (Beaver) Rebel MP-14

Post by Rob Helt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:38 pm

Hi Bob;
Mike Davis posted an attachment of the "baby beaver" with his message on
dec.24. He has 3 pics of the plane anchored. I have a number of pictures
but mostly from a builders perspective (in other words pics tell more than a
1000 words). The M-462 is rated at 315hp.@2450rpm for up to 5min.
cont.power=280hp@2200rpm and cruise=195hp@1900rpm. My source is
unfortunately not Morovia which would have been nice since they are a
Ontario based company. I did approach them on a number of occasions however
they had a firm price (much higher than the one I quoted and it did not
include prop or exhaust) and when I spoke with them last at Sun-n-Fun they
did not seem to know much about the engine at that time. Hopefully my
engine choice won't let me down. I'll be getting the engine in Feb/March of
2001 and if everything goes according to plan I should be installing it
that summer-fall. Murphy is planning on having the M-14 flying on their SR
by Sun-n-Fun 2001 and I'm sure I'll benefit form their experience in
mounting the M-462.

Hi Rob !

Did I miss it somewhere ?? What is the Hp rating for the M-462 ??
This DOES sound like a very suitable choice for the SR, both on price
and weight. The Avia prop is a very nice addition - it has a very
simple mechanism, almost like automatic transmission !

Hi All;
For those interested price of the M-462 with 0 time since factory
overhaul, including Avia constant speed prop with 0 time since factory
overhaul Plus new exhaust is around 10,500 US. I figure with all needed
accessories plus mount and cowling should be between 4000-6000US. Can
probably use the firewall fwd package that Murphy will eventually be
offering but those prices have yet to be determined. For more info you

Thanks for the update, Rob !

I should just jump in here to clarify a possible
misunderstanding
that SR builders might be getting ;

The factory mods to raise the gross weight to 3500 lb. on
wheels
are completely separate from the mods to mount the M-14P. That is, you
can still have an M-14P, even if you do not raise the gross weight -
BUT - you'll have to be extra careful about not exceeding VNE, and you
will have less useful load !! OR - you could do the mods for 3,500 lb,
and use a Lycoming O-540 and have a LOT of extra load capacity and
safety margin on speed.

It might be worth looking into the mods & mount for the M-14P
that the factory will be supplying - to mount your M-462. Even if the
mounts don't fit, the reinforcing mods might help ! (Not nearly as
extensive as the gross weight upgrade mods ....)

Without getting into specific suppliers, I'm SURE that most
SR builders would REALLY like to know the approx. costs for the M-462
!!
Also weights, horsepower, and other stats.....

Super (Beaver) Rebel MP-14

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:39 pm

Thanks Rob !

The more I hear, the better that M-462 sounds ! A fair bit more
power than the IO-540, and a MUCH better price !! The SR sure looks
GREAT with that round engine, nicely cowled - hope it all works out
well for you. I'm sure there will be several people watching you !! :-)

I <was> really hoping that I'd get to bring the M-14P powered
SR-3500 home from Sun 'n Fun, for the Toronto Show, but apparently it is
scheduled to fly up to Alaska about that time. :-( :-(
I think we'd have had a LOT of interest in Ontario, if I could do some
demo flying with it ! Of course, they'll sell a bunch of them in Alaska,
too !! Just CAN'T WAIT to get it onto 3500 amphibs & go blast around
Quebec & Northern Ontario - look out, Beavers !!! :-)
