[rebel-builders] wheel landings

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:20 am

Yep...what Drew says!

Howard, 10 years after first hitting the sky with his Rebel and after 7
years of flying amphibs had to go get 10 hrs dual on wheels before they'd
give him inflight again...and then when I put him back on Amphibs this June
he had to find a CFI with Amphib time that was willing to give him a check
ride before they'd cover him again on floats...so you never know. Then again
you haven't cost them what Howard has either! :O)

Never say never Mike What the FAA will let you get away with doesn't mean
your insurance comany won't screw ya by sending you out for more dual.

[rebel-builders] Wheel landings

Charlie, I'd sure like to get to watch you bring in a DC-3. A pretty
sight, no doubt.

Another way to describe it: A fraction of a second after the mains,
cabin and wings stop their descent at touchdown, apply just enough
forward stick to stop the _tail_ from continuing _its_ descent. Doesn't
take much. If you don't stop the _tail_ from continuing to go down (and
you have proper airspeed) the angle of attack and lift will increase, of
course, causing the mains to come off, which looks and feels a lot like
-- a bounce. (Personally, I prefer to think of stopping the tail's
descent rather than holding the mains on. In my noggin' the latter
thought is more likely to lead me to apply too much forward stick.) Then
gradually apply more & more forward stick to stay in a level attitude as
airspeed diminishes, for most of the roll out. That's the fun part.

The most points are awarded for holding level attitude as long as
possible, while still being able to gently lower the tail without
dropping (bouncing) it at the end of the roll out. :-)

Ron

But use caution - the amount of forward pressure required should be only enough to hold the mains on - not to force the airplane into (or on to) the ground.

You would if I was giving the BFR and you brought a tail dragger! Then again
if you were helicopter rated and multi rated and we did the BFR in a Bell 47
you would be good to go in either a Sikorsky jolly green or a C-150, Pitts, or
DC-3 for another two years ... no rhyme nor reason to many of the FAR's,
common sense shal not prevail!
