Diesel engine option

At this point, a LOT less expensive than the $85,000 USD quoted
for the Thielert !!! (Heck, you could buy THREE brand new Lycomings
for THAT money !!! )
.....bobp
Bob I think you're confusing SMA with thielert. The price quoted on
thielerts website is 19,500euro

I thought Brian had asked them about the total <landed> cost, with
exhaust & accessories, and got a price of $85,000 .....

Things like shipping, duty, accessories, and mounts can add
a lot - just ask the guys who buy gliders from Europe !

(Of course, i've been wrong before ! ;-) :-) )

Post by Scott Brynen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

The Thielert is sold by Superior (NA rep), and they have on their website
some questions and answers. Note that Superior call it a 'Centurian Engine'

http://www.superior-air-parts.com/pdf/c ... stions.pdf

Cost and Availability
1. What is the cost of the engine and what is included in this cost?
$19,900.00 including engine, FADEC, harness, starter, alternator, vac pump,
gearbox, governor, etc.

Yeah, you're ranting, but do not forget about the reliability of the O-320.

Hi Ken

I talked to these folks at Oshkosh. They have absolutely no interest in
the experimental aircraft. They talked about ridiculous costs in the range
of $85,000 US plus installation items that you would need. Installed in a
Cessna 182 - somewhere in the range of $150,000!?! Just nuts. Their booth
was empty & no wonder!

They were going to put in into a Maule & Embry Riddle (Spelling?) was going
to be a test bed for them. They are selling on the fact they you may save
this much money on fuel over the life of the overhaul etc. with nothing
else on the table.

Hopefully they will see the light people stop knocking at their door.

Personally, I waited for years looking for a diesel & was disappointed at
having to put an 0320 under the hood. Nothing wrong with it I guess but no
my idea of fun. Just love those winter starts freezing my rear off waiting
for an hour or two for the engine temps. to climb a few degrees before I
dared start it.

I thought we were in the modern age. Am I ranting yet?

Cheers

Brian #328R

Might be a descent consideration for a Rebel or Elite. From their web

it looks like even though it is only 135hp it generates more thrust than
an
O-360. It weighs a little more than an O-320, but less than an O-360.
The
fuel consumption, which can be either Jet A1 or automotive diesel, is 70%
less than an O-360. They report that in a C-172 at MTOW the rate of

Diamond aircraft is using this engine in their new Twinstar twin engine

Diesel engine option

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Thanks !! If that $19,900 USD is the price AT Superior's plant,
that is very much more interesting ! (If it's the price at the
factory door in Europe, not so exciting.)

How much does the whole thing weigh ?? And what props can you
use ?? Might be a viable choice for a Rebel builder who flies a LOT,
has access to jet fuel, and doesn't plan on going to amphibs......

Most small airports around here have 100LL, and access to
auto fuel, but jet or diesel could be a bit hard to come by at many.
Even Brampton only has a small quantity, in a fuel truck that's
usually hidden away. For me, flying coast to coast, without a
transponder, car gas is a much better option at the moment.

Diesel engine option

Ah, the joys of becoming sucked into an engine conversation... You can
spend years spinning your wheels looking at engines and talking about them.
So, let me throw some more grease under the treads...

The other nice thing about the Theilert (sp) is the fuel consumption. 0.27
BSFC (don't you love 4 stroke diesels?)

3.9 GPH diesel/JetA at 75% (102 HP) is hard to argue with, in particular if
it runs regular diesel as an option. Compare that to a O-320 running the
same HP (102) at 7.7 GPH. The plane almost pays for the replacement engine
in fuel savings over the TBO/TBR.

I still think it'd be too heavy for a Rebel... :-) Elite, maybe.

Hi

Is the engine weight too high is it a weight & balance problem with the
engine pushing the CG way too far forward?

Diesel engine option

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Hi Brian !

Guess that was one of those days I worked 'til 5:00 AM -
just plain addled !! Got the 2 diesels mixed ---

I agree - the SMA folks seem to be totally out of it !!
The Thielert doesn't sound bad, but I want to hear about it
when somebody can tell me I can <actually> get one <here>, in Canada,
at a reasonable price ! And I want to SEE the 135 hp. performance
actually beat an O-320 !

It seems to be a bit heavier than the 165 hp 2.5L Subaru,
and a <bit> more expensive. There are a fair number of Subarus
actually flying in Rebels, there's lots of fuel choices readily
available, parts and service are readily available, and the
fuel consumption runs about 60% of a Lyc. ....

Hhhmmmmmmm .... tell me again why I should spend $40,000 USD
for a Thielert installation ?? !! ;-)

(Before I get jumped on again, that $40K number came right off Superior's
mis-spelled FAQ page, as the typical price for one, installed, in
a C-172 or Cherokee.)

Brian Cross

Diesel engine option

Post by Brian Cross » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Hi Bob

I hope I did not sound like I was jumping on you. That was not meant. I
was concerned that I had made an error in my comments re: SMA. I am 100%
sure it was SMA with those costs. I still do not understand their
approach. As I mentioned in a previous post, their booth was empty. Even
the certified guys were keeping their distance. It makes a perfect
environment for a decent engine at the right price because right now, as
far as I am concerned the replacement for the Lycs. is not a given.

Sorry again if I wounded you!

See you at the meeting next week. SHould be great!

Cheers

It is being tested & possibly offered in one of the Maules as well as the

How much does the whole thing weigh ?? And what props can you
use ?? Might be a viable choice for a Rebel builder who flies a LOT,
has access to jet fuel, and doesn't plan on going to amphibs......

Most small airports around here have 100LL, and access to
auto fuel, but jet or diesel could be a bit hard to come by at many.
Even Brampton only has a small quantity, in a fuel truck that's
usually hidden away. For me, flying coast to coast, without a
transponder, car gas is a much better option at the moment.

Rob Luce

Diesel engine option

Post by Rob Luce » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Hhhmmmmmmm .... tell me again why I should spend $40,000 USD
for a Thielert installation ?? !! ;-)
(Before I get jumped on again, that $40K number came right off Superior's
mis-spelled FAQ page, as the typical price for one, installed, in
a C-172 or Cherokee.)
Cost of engine mount, accesories, prop, paperwork and profit margin equals
$40k US.

Cost of the engine $19.9k US. I seriously doubt that you could actually
spend an additional $20k on an engine mount and prop for a Rebel. :-)

The only reason I could see is the fuel. Diesel or Jet A. Where I'm at in
the US, it's hard to pay $1.60/gal for diesel for the truck, and then go pay
$2.90/gal for 100LL for the plane. (Chicago area)

The engine just uses less fuel, and the fuel could be bought less
expensively if you use diesel instead of Jet A.

And then there's the entire chemical compatability with the polymers that
are used within a plane. 100LL wont be around forever, the only substance
that I've seen that would be able to support the compression/temperature
combinations that we run in a "normal" airplane engine is ethanol. But that
wont work because we have "rubber" hoses and materials throughout the fuel
system that turn to jelly when combined with most forms of alcohol over a
long period of time. Thus the problem with Mogas. (How many builders have
used fluoropolymer based fuel lines rather than the normal "aircraft
quality" fuel lines that will fall apart after running mogas (with an
ethanol additive) for a period of time?)

Diesel and Jet A don't have that problem. Keep using the same old hoses and
seals you always have been.

Then there is the Europe thing. The cost of 100LL in EU is expensive.
Diesel is cheap.

The most important reason to run the engine though: Because you think it's
cool. :-)

Bob Patterson

Diesel engine option

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Hi Brian !

No, it wasn't you I was worried about ! It was me who
misunderstood !!

SMA are not alone - seems there are several people out there
who have developed good products who just aren't "running with them",
for some weird reason. It's a shame, but they will miss out on a
good market (and fame & fortune :-) ) !!

Really looking forward to the Builders meeting next week -
hope it will be a big turnout, as we've been given the whole HANGAR
for the meeting !! Don't forget to bring a chair ... :-)

(I'm sure Darryl will want to see a few Rebels !) ;-)

Bob Patterson

Diesel engine option

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Actually, it would be easier than you think to spend an extra
$20K - have you priced a 3 blade MT prop lately !!! ;-)

I've heard numbers in the $12K - $15K region - and that is
the ONLY prop approved for the Thielert. Of course, we don't need
the STC paperwork, but a lot of the other stuff could be costly -
I'm sure they approve only ONE kind of radiator, etc.

Up here, Shell still makes auto fuel without alcohol,
and we've been paying over 70 cents a LITER for mogas for quite
a while - diesel is only pennies cheaper, and a LOT less available.

I have flown several aircraft, including at least 3 Rebels,
for over 12 years burning auto gas (almost exclusively in one Rebel),
with standard hoses. Sure, there were problems when I got BAD GAS -
3 times in 12 years - it was immediately visible in the sight guage
tubing, and just meant replacing the tubing within a month or 2.
Only one of the episodes with bad gas happened in the USA - the
others were here, and ONE was BAD 100LL !! The problem wasn't
alcohol, it was a bunch of old benzene, toluene, and other solvents
that people like to dump into fuel to dispose of it. I hear many
reports of PCB's being dumped into diesel fuel for the truckers
to burn off !!

Probably a bigger worry, long term, if alcohol percentages
increase, is the penchant for alcohol to EAT aluminum - there go
our tanks and fuel lines, not to mention carburetor bowls, intake
manifolds, and the rest of the engine !

If you want to run jet fuel or diesel, AND you want
"REALLY COOL" - have a look at: www.atpcoinc.com !!

The ATP turbine weighs well under 200 lb, puts out approx.
200 horsepower, and, according to the test pilot, who I've known for
several years, burns under 16 gal./hour wide open, and under 10 GPH,
at altitude, is conservative cruise !!! I could live with THAT !!
That would make about THE most exciting Rebel on amphibs that
I can imagine !!! And talk about cool .....

(Sound of Turbine Rebel spooling up !!! ) :-) :-)

......bobp
PS
Unlike the 2400 hours "throw-away" time for the Thielert,
the ATP turbine has a "(suggested)INSPECTION(only)" at 10,000 hours !!!

The most important reason to run the engine though: Because you think it's
cool. :-)

Brian Cross

Diesel engine option

Hi Bob

Thanks Bob for the clarification. Just a bit worried that I inadvertently
offended you.

Really look forward to the meeting next week. It has been awhile since I
have heard Darryl speak. I will bring a chair & my hangar will open.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Gregory Gordon

Diesel engine option

Post by Gregory Gordon » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Dear Roger,
Like you I am building my tail kit, although my progress is moving along
nicely. I also have been thinking about an appropiate engine for my Elite. I
am not too "fussed" about a Lycoming, due mainly to the overall initial cost
and then the ongoing cost of parts. A month ago I flew from my home
(Sydney, Aus.) to Bundaberg, the home of Jabiru to have a look at their 6
litre, Jabiru 6600 engine. I was impressed. At this point in time, the
engine is been trialled in a 3/4 scaled experimental Spitfire aircraft. This
aircraft moves along at 200kts plus; but it is very early days yet. I was
advised that the factory will be trying out the engine in an RV 6 soon. The
packaged price is very good; The engine complete with starter, muffler &
dual electronic ignition is Aus$23,000; they will have a complete fire wall
forward component kit for the Elite/Rebel for Aus$5000; this includes
cowling, engine mount, oil cooler, propellor(fixed pitch wooden), spinner &
miscellaneous items. But I say again that it is very early days!!!
I have also looked at two Subaru packages based upon either a EJ-22(160hp)
or the EJ-25(180hp) using a SUB4 PSRU. The SUB4 agent here in Australia has
a new engine package based upon the EJ-25 and the SUB4 PSRU for about
Aus$13,000. Both these engine can easily be turbo charged. So there are some
good alternatives to the Lycoming.

Kind regards,
Greg Gordon. Elite 724E
