Hey everyone,
Just for clarification, the Wheeler of NSI (the bad guy) and the Wheeler of
the "Wheeler Express" airplane are two different people and companies. By the
way, the Wheeler of the Wheeler express airplanes went bankrupt after the
first two demo planes had fatal accidents. He was unable to sell planes and
get backing for his company after that. The rights for the plane (which is
really a nice craft) were sold.

The EG-33 is 243HP @ 6000 (From a Subaru torque graph),psru is a must. Avoid their older sprag clutch psru. While the ej33 is
an amazing engine I prefer a more conservative approach rather than
tweaking to the max at 6000 rpm. Crossflow does know how to get the

Wouldn't those be much heavier than an EG-33? When VelocityIn this power range there is much to be said for a Chev V-8 or

EG-33's are fairly rare, since they were only in the Subaru SVX,Egenfelner and Stratus have web sites but I am not aware of them
selling the ej33. Dave at Subie-Lyc might have mentioned doing one
though.

Yes your numbers are correct for the Subaru eg33 but tweaking to over
300 hp with turbos and runnning a high ratio psru (2.4:1??) is a big
increase. Personally I'd like to see some demonstrated in-flight
reliability at those levels before betting something like $20k and my
butt on one. Probably very workable though with a good intercooler, a
varible pitch prop and a reasonably low cruise power.
All the weights I've seen are 300+ lb for the longblock and 400+
installed for an eg33 conversion which is in the same range as even an
LS-1 as I understand it. I'm a Subaru believer but I've also seen a few
replaced with Lycomings due to teething problems. I also tend to drool
when I look through a Summit Racing catalog and see how many of my
problems could be solved for very little money if I were using a Chev.
And brand new Chev longblocks are also available complete with a high
speed marine camshaft for the cost of a used eg33. I've already scrapped
one low time ej22 due to overhaul costs and it is a much more popular
engine than the eg33...
Yes an eg33 will be heavier than an 0-360 but you need to carry less
fuel, so it can still be worth considering. And I'd rather use an eg33
than a tweaked to the max smaller engine. I'm just not convinced that a
souped up 33 is the very best option for someone wanting 300 hp on an
SR.

I myself have all but decided that the eg33 is the way that I will go with
my SR, but another engine to consider in this discussion is a Mazda 20B
rotary. Atkins Rotary offers one turbo charged at a reported 350HP.
www.AtkinsRotary.com Since the SR3500 has come into being that Chevy LS-1
is looking better too... it sure would be a shame to build that monster and
only put 300HP on it.

Hi Mike !
I was talking to Crossflow at the Toronto Aviation Show.
Apparently, there is at least one Super Rebel already flying with
a six-cylinder Subaru, and they have another one very close to
flying (another month ...).
They certainly have a nice shop, and have been building
racing engines for many years. They are now making their own re-drive,
rather than using the Marcotte drive. They had an engine at the
show with an M-T 3 bladed constant speed prop - very nice !

Anybody have any comments about Crossflow? I was going to go with them for
my Super Rebel since they have a complete firewall forward package. Hoping
to get the 320HP turbo'd engine. Can anyone provide info on how to contact
Stratus and this Eggenfellner person for comparison shopping? Or do they
even deal with the high horsepower Suburus?

DON'T EVEN <THINK> about talking to NSI - unless you really want
PAIN !! We've met several people who sent them money and got NOTHING !!
They have unhappy people all over the world !
Dave Bangle, at SubieLyc, in Montana, or the folks at Stratus,
in Seattle (I think), are good people who do nice work, and ACTUALLY
DELIVER. And there are several Rebel builders here on the list who
can give you all kinds of sugestions and help, as they are happily
flying their Subarus !

Hi bobp:
Thanks for the reply. I will look at the EJ22.
I'm going to Arlington ( not quite Oshkosh but closer) & will be talking to
NSI. Will inform the site when I get back. Thanks again for your reply.
