tailwheel shimmy

Post by Gordon Mohr » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Maule had a shimmy problem too. The easy fix was to put a heavier spring
on the right side than the left so as to interrupt the harmonic. Worked
for me. I do think, though, that the pivot should be close to vertical.
(in relation to the ground, not the airplane)

Also ..... I have fitted a SCOTT 3400 tailwheel , which has improved
ground handling immensely .... but I sometimes get HORRENDOUS tailwheel
shimmy upon landing (mainly / always on tar) .... I suspect it has
something to do with the angle of the wheel / pivot point in relation to
the vertical (which it ISN'T ... as it is laying forward somewhat)
I suspect that the pivot shaft should be more vertical , even, perhaps
laid rearwards to stop this effect ... any ideas guys !?!?!
What do you reckon Wayne ?

tailwheel shimmy

Post by Rick Harper » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

G'day Gordon !

I have already put a stronger spring on one side (sorry...shoulda mentioned it) ..... but the pivot is definitely way off vertical ... I'll bend the springs and make it so :-)

Thanks
Rick & Wendy Harper
