Moose Extended Baggage Area

Post by scott.hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:28 pm

Don, I am doing the same thing with my Rebel (running the cables through the
bulkhead. I placed .063 doublers at each hole but otherwise our installations
look similar. I am just pulling cable right now (no swagging done yet). The
only trouble I have had so far is a bit of noise. It looks to me like I have
some rubbing sounds from the cable passing through the plastic. I have my
holes aligned very well (running a tight string down the center) so I know
that the sound is not going to result in a lot of wear on the plastic or any
wear on the bulkheads.

Moose Extended Baggage Area

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:28 pm

Thanks Don !

I think this will rapidly become THE way to finish the Moose
fuselage - it just adds SO much useful space. And the weight back
there doesn't seem to hurt - within reason.

Eliminating the bulkhead and door at the end of the old
baggage area, plus the flat floor, gives much more space for light,
bulky items like sleeping bags, rods, etc., as well as space for
sleeping without moving the seats. You would, of course, want to
install lots of hooks for cargo netting, so this stuff couldn't
roam around loose ! :-) One possibility for the floor
material is structural foam - the stuff Richard Schreder used for
wing ribs in his later gliders. This is incredibly strong and light -
and it would be a LOT warmer than aluminum for sleeping. You can't
break even the 3/8" thick sheet over your knee !!

That foil-coated plastic bubble pack is GREAT insulation -
light weight, easy to install, cheap, and it cuts noise AND heat !!
I used it on a Rebel over 10 years ago, for the firewall, doors, headliner,
and even as a temporary 'curtain' at the back of the baggage area.
It's available as "barn insulation", at many hardware stores.
Very useful stuff for Rebels, and Meese !! ;-)

HI Bob,

You mention a material I am not familiar with though I am a fan of the late
Richard Schreder as an old glider pilot.

Can you give me a source or brand name for the structural foam you mention.

Thanks,
Don

Moose Extended Baggage Area

Sorry Don, I don't know where to get it - it's likely a 3M or
DuPont product though .... Likely someone who has built an HP
would know a source.

It is polyvinylchloride plastic foam, according to Schreder's
notes with the HP-18. It is a medium brown colour, and very hard.
I was really impressed with the ribs after trying to break them
on a bench, and by hand - the stuff is STRONG !!! You drill, sand,
saw, and file it, just like metal. The pores are very small.

He used it for the ribs in all his later designs, just
bonding the skins to the ribs with Polyfiber Epoxy Primer (!!!).
Almost ALL of the HP-22 was built of this structural foam - the
fuselage was then coated with fiberglas - this was the "everything"
glider - a 2-seat amphibious, self-launching motorglider !!!!

Hmmmmmm ...... being PVC, there might be a problem in
a fire - something to check on, I guess. Wasn't a consideration
for gliders ! :-)

Rob and I added a rear cargo door on the passenger side as well when we did our rear baggage area. No worries about moving flap cables since we are mounting our flap handle on the cabin top and are using all push pull tubes. I'll get some pictures on the archives soon.

Ted Waltman

Moose extended baggage area

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:31 pm

I posted 3 pictures of my extended baggage area between bulkheads C to E
(Area 109-S/M Interior). Pics show additional channels in floor (added
something like 20 two-inch tall channels on the floor and sides to support
the corner wraps and flooring). Channels are out of 0.036 2024 T3. Floor
is 0.040 6061 T6. I probably over did the nut-plates, as I put in a
nut-plate every 3" on the channels and on the floor-edge of the corner
wraps.

I still have to run the elevator and rudder cables which will be float until
aft of bulkhead E. At that point I'll put in pulleys for each to allow the
cables to go up to the existing elevator pulleys at H (will add two new
pulleys at H for the rudder cables). More pics on that when I get that done
shortyly.

Ted
