Elevator Mod (with picture)

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

Mike K, I think Mike Davis has "autoenabled" to cut any attachments going to
the list. You need to upload your picture to the archives to share it.

I had stated back in the winter, when I shared this interference problem
with the list, that I figured this interference had to effect all the SR
models as the extra .063 in thickness added to both sides of the fins rear
spar (by the thicker 3500 spar cap doublers) shouldn't have been the only
clearance available to the 2500 model. The only additional change was the
rear horizontal stab spar getting another .063? layer moving back the hinge
line by that amount. The elevator "V" to fin post clearance must have been
darn close in the original 2500 series and I suspected at that time in order
to get extra clearance some builders may have mounted the stabs single
attach plates in front of the tailcones attach bracket pairs, instead of in
between them.

IF anyone on the list that's flying, or still building, did so to get the
required clearance please do the statistic records (and your health) a
favour and mount them correctly. Putting them in front puts the bolts in a
singular shear, where as if they are installed correctly the 4 x AN4 bolts
are in double shear.

Cheers,
Wayne

Resending 'cause I didn't attach the picture right the first time:
I have heard murmurings about this for a while but wasn't sure if it
applied
to just the Moose or 3500 upgrade to the SR, or exactly what was being
described, but now I have seen with my own eyes that the elevator, if
built
per the manual for any one of these planes will not fit where it's
supposed
to go. You can't slide it back far enough due to the "V" hitting the rear
spar of the vertical stabilizer. You need to take the two ribs that form
the "V" and bend them about 1 3/8 inches back from where the "V"
originally
ended, creating a four inch wide rectangular section that will fit around
the vertical stabilizer rear spar.

Elevator Mod (with picture)

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

The drawing came through to me just fine from the list server. The drawing
is actually imbedded in the email body itself instead of being an attached
file. I have my Mail Message Format set to "Microsoft Word" versus "Plain
Text" which is probably the difference. Considering the fact that many list
members may not have an email program capable of anything but "Plain Text",
you're right, I should probably upload the picture to the archive. I'll do
that today if I can remember how. What I want to know is why there is no
manual update - not even a comment in the Tech Notes on the MAM website.
Every SR/Moose builder must have run into this.

Thanks for restating what you had before. I couldn't quite picture it then
which is why I wanted to share a simple drawing with the list. You know
what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words.
