Exhaust system cracks on 0320

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

I just discovered a 2 inch crack in my exhaust system. I have the old, old
Murphy cross-over exhaust system, from about 8 years or so back. These are
the non stainless steel ones, and I seem to recall others many years ago
having similar problems. The crack is on the right side on the inside of the
Y joint. I have always had the rear tail pipes supported and never clamped
the cross-over joint. There are only 121 hours on it.

Hopefully some of you long-timers (I didn't say old), still remember this
problem. My question to you is, should I try to weld these, or throw them
out, and get new ones? If I reweld the crack at this Y joint, will that hold
it, or are they going to then fall apart elsewhere? Thanks.

Good thing it didn't happen a week or two ago, as I just got back from some
great flying around Vanouver Island, and then the BC Interior with my wife.
She would not have been happy if we had got stuck somewhere.

I need to get it fixed quickly, though, as I am planning another long trip
in about a week from now.

Walter

Exhaust system cracks on 0320

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

Walter, the only place I have seen the old system crack is at the exhaust
flange area on the front left cylinder. Haven't seen it at the "Y". I would
suspect that you can weld it up properly with TIG and add a reinforcement
overtop to be sure. Then make sure all your slip joints are coated with
anti-seize and reassemble. You say the rear of the pipes are supported. Are
they attached to the firewall or back up to the engine?? Have seen some
attached to the firewall like an automotive exhaust would be done. In my
opinion this can make things worse as you are holding the rear of the
exhaust while the engine moves around in relation to it. I like to strap the
exhaust back up to the engine so everything moves together.

Regards,
Wayne

Exhaust system cracks on 0320

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

I have the pipes supported by the old red rubber hose material hanging from
the motor mounts, not the engine. Not sure where I could attach them to the
engine, because they are so far back, but I'll have another look.

Thanks for the info.

Exhaust system cracks on 0320

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

On Howard's the left side (which is the worst for the cantilever effect) is
supported by a steel strap that goes from a clamp on the exit pipe to a
clamp on the rear cylinder pipe. The auto style muffler clamp is attached
about 3" down on the rear stack with the bolts facing out so the strap could
be attached and double nut'd and then similar on the exit pipe to tie them
together. The strap is almost straight up and down. His right side is not
strapped, as it is more balanced (teeter-totter wise) with the cross over
being more rearward on the right side exit set. We haven't seen any cracking
since this strap was installed. His original exhausts (same as yours but he
sent it out for hard chrome plating) front left pipe broke around it's
perimeter through the EGT probe hole about 3" down from the flange. He then
had a shop duplicate the exhaust exactly from stainless (except he had them
make it 1 " tighter to the engine so the muffler shrouds didn't drag the
cowl bottom). It then cracked a couple times around the front left flange.
The second time I welded it up I added the brace strap and it has been fine
now for 4+ years.

You could also possibly attach your straps to the sump pan bolts. Just use
heavier material than the stainless gear clamp material I used, trying to
throw some quick ones together for Bob P to get him off on the Ramble to
B.C.with!! They didn't last very long before they broke! Bob's has the nice
Foslington? (not right but close) stainless exhaust on it. The slip joints
have nice pegs and mating holes to go into, at each stack, so they can
expand and contract without building up stresses.

Thanks Wayne, and Drew for the info. I will get them welded with a doubler
support over the Y, and try and find a better attach point for the supports.

Exhaust system cracks on 0320

Post by yeom » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

I have the old cross over exhaust system and it cracked at the Y join, I
welded it then supported the tail pipes from the motor and braced them
apart. I have not had any problem since.

I have built slip joints into the tailpipes though.

Cheers
