Flying the Moose stick position

Post by Al & Deb Paxhia » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

I had the same concern about the stick not being comfortable for me. What I
did is shorten the top and bottom of the stick and bent both the bottom and
top bends a few degrees. This brings the grip between my legs. With my
wrist and forearm resting on my leg my hand fits the grip. I'm new to sticks
and find it very comfortable to fly. I also set a seat stop on the forward
end of the track to limit the forward seat position. This keeps the stick
off the seat when full aft. These mods are not a problem for me but could
be a problem if multiple people fly your airplane.

I have not done the spade mod yet. Maybe next winter when the snow is
flying. I have done a center mixer bellcrank mod and plan to do the spade
mod when I get tired of flying. This new bellcrank does shorten the stick
throw and increases the stick force a bit. The force is not too bad, 3 lb.
or so.

What is the center mixer bell crank mod? Something with the aileron droop
mixer deal?

Thanks,
Scott

The bell crank transfers the left and right pull of the cable attached to
the stick, to fore and aft push pull tubes. Also the bell crank slides to
give you the aileron droop. The bell crank design I have is a year or so
old. This design gives more aileron movement and removes the differential
from this part of the controls. MAM has changed the design several times.
The MAM demo aircraft has a new design, sounds like it's working fine.
The controls were a problem for me to rig and get them the way I thought
they needed to be. If I had to do it over I would set the arm off the
torque tube to an angle less than MAM recommended. My instructions said 54
degrees, at this angle the aileron travel is greater one direction than the
other. I think I would test the controls at 20 degrees and see what they
do. Once I mounted the arm to the torque tube it was a done deal and the
only other option was to modify the bell crank in the cabin. The problem
that develops at 54 degrees is backlash from the torque tube bearing slop.
Instead of arm rotation some of that motion goes to take up the bearing
slop. If the angle is smaller you get more symmetrical movement of the
torque tube arm and less affect from the slop. If the torque tube arm angle
is reduced, then the bell crank in the cabin can be angled aft to give back
the aileron differential. The demo airplane has a angled aft bell crank but
I don't know if they changed the torque tube arm.
