Hi Gang,
Today was the first flight of 026SR, 5 years in the building. All I can
say
is rock solid airplane. I have only two squawks, the static port is on the
Pitot mast and is getting pressurized, airspeed indicated 60MPH until I
opened the alt static port, airspeed and altimeter then looked much better.
Second the engine baffle is rubbing on the cowl, baffle needs a trim.
As many of you have said stalls were a non event, clean 60MPH, full flaps
50
MPH, oil temp 190 in cruse and 225 during slow flight. I have 40 hours to
fly-off and my area is a 50 mile radius of Olympia, WA, if your in that
area
give me a call and I'll drop in.
Keep building it's worth it!
Al

G'day Rick

Thanks for your encouragement.

I don't necessarily believe the stall speed, but when I get a chance I will check it with the GPS.

It really is a nice plane to fly. Well worth the trouble!

What about explaining to the group just where and what is Ayers Rock. It might give people just some idea of just how big OZ is and the attractions that we have.

Enjoy the trip!

G'day Ian,

Boy, you're up late ! ( I just got home from work :-(

OK,.... for the uninitiated (and this would cover most Canadians and Americans alike) ....

Australia is virtually exactly the same / land mass size as the US (minus Alaska & Canada) .....YES IT REALLY IS GUYS !!!
And there is a LOT of " NOTHING " in the vast majority of it !

Sydney (our eastern most capital ) to Perth (our western most capital) is the SAME distance as the U.S. east coast to west coast.

Ayers rock is a HUGE monolith / rock situated about 1300 miles due west (and a bit north) from Sydney . It is a sacred area to our indigenous people (the Aboriginies), and is several miles around at its base and about 1100 feet high ....and it sticks out like dog balls (a common Ozzie slang here guys) on an otherwise FLAT / desert landscape.

Our up & coming trip will cover about 3,000 to 3,500 NM by the time we stop off at many interesting places on the way TO and FROM Ayers Rock (which is about the same as flying coast to coast across the U.S. and half way back again)....should be a HOOT !!! :-)

I'm already planning the next trip in the back of the old bean (head) ..... and thinking of making an annual or bi-annual trip to different places each time for all the interested aviators (much the same as Bob's "Rebel Ramble" ....(might even use the same name ....if it's OK with Bob :-)

I'm off to bed guys ...

Ian ! ...you had better start planning your first big trip to Hoxton Park Airport for our next breakfast "do" ...last Sunday in June !!! (come up the day before ...we'll put you up for the night !)

Hi Rick !

I'd be delighted to hear about the "Australian Rebel Ramble"
- in fact, I'd LOVE to fly on one with you !!!!! :-)

One of these years !! We're active glider pilots, too, so
a trip 'down under' has been on The Wish List for years, as has that
Goas (?) Flying tour of OZ ......

We really hope that others will organize "Rebel Builders of
WHEREVER" builders groups, too ! Wherever there are 4 or 5 builders
within driving distance ...

The Rebel Builders of Ontario group has certainly been an
enjoyable social experience, as well as a big technical aid and
moral support for many builders for over 10 years -
Anna and I would be VERY pleased to see it duplicated in other areas
and countries. The sharing of experiences helped everyone !

.....bobp
PS
I don't know about the rest of the group, but we'd sure
like to hear all about your trip(s) - if folks don't want them
here, you could post to rebel-ramble@dcsol.com ....

G'day Rick,
I know we are a long way away but just to set the record straight (how you say.....for the uninitiated), even though the States tend to think of us as just one more state we really aren't! ;^)
Actually I am looking forward to visiting your "little" part of the world in November. My SO has a conference in Adelaide and we plan to do a bit of touring to undecided locations afterward.

Adelaide is only an hour away from here by jet. Rick is a little further away.

Just yell if you are looking for tour ideas.

Yes I was up late. Couldn't sleep as I was still on a high after flying the Rebel.

I liked your story about the trip to Ayers Rock. You did not mention that it was in the middle of OZ surrounded by desert that will be full of wildflowers. Should make for a great fly.

Hoxton Park would be a good fly from my place.
Thanks for the offer of accommodation, but according to the MAM video I can sleep in the Rebel! :-)

Keep us all posted on the trip.

First Flight

Post by Dave Ricker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Ian
Thanks we'll keep that in mind when we get a little closer to planning time. By the way, just where are you?
Sure would be interesting to do some Rebel visit type touring since we don't have any flying Rebels in our province, in fact we have exactly 3 Rebel/Elites under construction in our parts...counting our Elite. I don't think there is a SR east of Montreal (1000km by road), in Canada at least. It would be fun to see your plane in person after hearing about the build & your recent first flight (Big congratulations!).
Cheers,
Dave R.

G'day Rick,
I know we are a long way away but just to set the record straight (how you say.....for the uninitiated), even though the States tend to think of us as just one more state we really aren't! ;^)
Actually I am looking forward to visiting your "little" part of the world in November. My SO has a conference in Adelaide and we plan to do a bit of touring to undecided locations afterward.

Hi Rick !

I'd be delighted to hear about the "Australian Rebel Ramble"
- in fact, I'd LOVE to fly on one with you !!!!! :-)

One of these years !! We're active glider pilots, too, so
a trip 'down under' has been on The Wish List for years, as has that

We really hope that others will organize "Rebel Builders of
WHEREVER" builders groups, too ! Wherever there are 4 or 5 builders
within driving distance ...

The Rebel Builders of Ontario group has certainly been an
enjoyable social experience, as well as a big technical aid and
moral support for many builders for over 10 years -
Anna and I would be VERY pleased to see it duplicated in other areas
and countries. The sharing of experiences helped everyone !

.....bobp
PS
I don't know about the rest of the group, but we'd sure
like to hear all about your trip(s) - if folks don't want them
here, you could post to rebel-ramble@dcsol.com (rebel-ramble@dcsol.com) ....

Our up & coming trip will cover about 3,000 to 3,500 NM by the time we
stop off at many interesting places on the way TO and FROM Ayers Rock (which
is about the same as flying coast to coast across the U.S. and half way back
again)....should be a HOOT !!! :-)
I'm already planning the next trip in the back of the old bean (head) .....

Thanks for your encouragement.

I don't necessarily believe the stall speed, but when I get a chance I
will check it with the GPS.
It really is a nice plane to fly. Well worth the trouble!

What about explaining to the group just where and what is Ayers Rock. It
might give people just some idea of just how big OZ is and the attractions
that we have.
Enjoy the trip!

First Flight

Post by Ian Donaldson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

G'day Dave

I live in a city called Geelong in the state of Victoria which is about 8 hours by road from Adelaide. it is an easy drive through spectacular coastal scenery.

If you don't already know, Adelaide is the wine capital of Australia. We have world famous wineries there that equal any in the world.
In fact the "Jacobs Creek " brand is the most popular wine in England. If you like wines, you will love touring the Adelaide area.

Rebels over here are rather scarce also. I only know of three that are flying, and they are also 1000k away! You would be most welcome to come over and play Rebels.

I'm sure that you will enjoy your trip to Australia.

PS flew 2 hours today ;-) ;-)

Thanks we'll keep that in mind when we get a little closer to planning time. By the way, just where are you?

G'day Mike !

Australian language is a mixture of many cultures.....and much of the older speak was taken from the English "Cockney" ....and these guys used "rhyming slang" for just about everything...(and we ended up with a lot of them too) .....

The last word of the slang usually rhymes with the "key" word that is being mentioned, eg:

Plates of meat = FEET
Frog & toad = ROAD
Bag 'o' fruit = SUIT
Jam jar = CAR
Bristol cities = TITTIES (boobs)

Septic Tanks = YANKS ......

and there's a rhyming slang saying for just about EVERYTHING you can imagine .....(and then some !)

The term "Septic" , I think, became popular during WW2 , when we had LOTS of Americans down here on "R & R" leave .... they were described as "Septic tanks" ...(yanks) ...which these days gets shortened to just "septics"

(I think there was a fair bit of friction going on .... from what I have heard ,( WAY before my time), the American servicemen were apparently far better paid than the Ozzies at the time, and could afford to "spend more on the girls" than the locals could...which meant that the ozzie boys often went without (the girls)...which fairly pissed them off :-)

This is p....r...o....b...a...b....l...y.... where the saying came into vogue ....the locals referring to Americans septic tanks was pretty derogatory (rude) at that time
(septic tanks were common in OZ as not many communities could afford to put in storm water & sewage systems...so they put in a tank to catch all the effluent .... a "septic tank" :-)

Hope this explains all !

Wow!... do they teach all that in school? Very interesting. I spent some time in Perth as a US Marine on R&R... apparently over the years our reputation has improved (this was in '89), we were very well received by all.

Thanks, Mike
