Tail Cone Questions

Here are several questions that come to mind as I ponder the tail cone
assembly sitting on my table --

1. Is there a consensus for an optimal location to mount the ELT? I was
thinking between bulkheads D and E.

2. Does a location under the baggage floor, slightly offset from the ST-31
channel, sound about right for the transponder antenna?

3. Does it make sense to drill drainholes in front of each bulkhead in the
tail so that I don't have a flying bathtub while operating on floats?

Jeffrey, if you are going fix pitch prop, the more you can get in the back
the better (don't imagine the Elite in T.D config is much different than the
Rebel C of G in that regards!) Generally the ELT gets mounted as far back on
the floor as possible, but have also seen some nice installations by making
a rack at the top of the bulkheads you described to keep it off the floor.

As for a Transponder antenna, why not right in front of the rudder pedal
bars for a short cable run and easy maintance if necessary? Just make sure
it's not in line with the exhaust stack!

Yes you should drill some small holes for and aft of each bulkhead at the
crease lines (low point) for water drainage. I say for and aft because when
it's a tail dragger the holes need to be forward of the bulkheads, and when
on floats the tail cone area is sloping forward, instead of aft, so the
holes need to be on the other side!

Hi Jeff

Just a thought.
At Arlington last year I diiscussed keeping water out of the tail cone with
the Murphy staff on site.Salt water at that. The suggestion was to use
Sikaflex 1A between mating surfaces instead of chromate primer. I did this
and the tail cone may as well be one piece as it is solid like a rock.
Following this one of our senior advisors on site commented that this may be
OK but thought that the chromate would have done just as good of a job. I'
m sure I will not have any water infiltration but should there be any
condinsation without drains it may build up. I have not installed drains as
yet. This is a good thought that I also should look into.

Canadian Regulations require adequate drainage in all structures!! Some of
the inspectors can get carried away though, so have your drill handy when
they show up. On my original Rebel I had to drill a drain hole at every rib
in the wings, at the rear spar junction, as I couldn't convince them that
all the water can run the full length of the spar and out at the root (at
this stage of the game I'd tell them where to go first!). Same goes for the
flaperons with drain holes at each rib. NOTE: On the SR this isn't going to
happen as the fuel tank goes to the rear spar, so a drain hole may be wise
outboard of the outer tank rib.

I think I told the story before about my C182. When I first got it and was
cleaning the belly grease off it I noticed a hole in the outer cabin skin,
that was clogged with dirt. Once I poked the dirt out a good 5 gallons of
water drained out of the belly. The cabin belly is the most important spot I
can think off. The tail cone will almost take care of itself in the tail
dragger configuration as it will run down and right out the end of FUS-30
onto the tail spring, but I bet you can't convince your inspector of that!!
