G'day.

I have finally completed my Rebel and it passed the final inspection today.
Now that was a milestone!

I have done an hour of ground running and taxying. You just don't know how tempted I was to just give it a little more throttle and see if it would fly! It really seems to want to go.

All I need now it the official certificate and we are off flying! Maybe next weekend!

A problem I have is, that the tail wheel (standard Murphy ) does not seem to want to unlock and swivel freely.
What should I be looking for?
Is there something that I have overlooked?
Any clues on adjustment?

Thanks and regards

Rebel

G'day Rick

I don't know about quick!

I mucked about with the construction over a period of 2 years but had quite a rest from it due to a spell of ill health.
I was going to build this Rebel in conjunction with my two best mates, but they were both killed together in an aircraft crash the week that the kit was delivered. That took the shine off things for a while. I really did not have the heart to start work on it.

As you know it needs more than one pair of hands on lots of the construction, and I had to make do as best as I could do using some inventiveness, or wait until I could get someone to call over to help. I even managed to get my 85 year old dad to help with the work.
Last weekend it took him for a taxi around the airfield in the Rebel, and I must admit that my heart was almost bursting with pride as he smiled at our handiwork. that was a nice feeling. I have reserved my first passenger carrying flight for him.

I worked regularly at it, but it did not let it take over my entire life. I treated the construction as a hobby. However my real job interfered with the project somewhat! The bills needed to be paid. I guess the secret to the construction is to think, read and plan ahead.

I had to keep a construction log to satisfy the Government, as you would know, but it was not strictly kept. If I had to estimate the construction time would be about 1000 to 1100 hours including the painting. The most time consuming part was the construction of the wings and I guess they took about 150/200 hours each. However a lot of other time was spent just sitting and thinking and just tinkering about..That time was not counted. Also I did not count the time I spent sitting in it, hangar flying! That was a good bit!

If the manual was just a little clearer things would have happened a lot quicker. I would have never finished the Rebel without the help of the
the group.

I would like to come to the Hoxton lunch but 600 miles to fly before lunch is a big ask!

Ayers rock would be magnificent. Who knows! Just maybe.

I am still waiting for the permit to fly. Maybe this weekend!

Regards

Ian Donaldson

G'day

Well it flies!

I spent most of the day doing the preflight inspections and finally summoned up the courage late in the day to open the throttle.
I was amazed at just how quickly that I leapt of the ground!

I'm not sure that the airspeed is reading correctly as the nose finally drops in the stall at 10k!
What stall speeds do others get?

The Rebel is just what the advertising says that it is! It's a real pussy to fly, and a really nice coordinated airlane.

I can only say to those building their Rebel is to keep at it. It is really worth it in the end!

I would like to extend my thanks to all those listers who have offered their help over the last few years. Your assistance has been instrumental in me finishing the Rebel.

I particularly appreciated the responses from Bob, Wayne and Rick Ford. It seemed that it was never a problem to answer all those questions and even to send photos of the areas that were causing me trouble. Thanks again.

I am now looking forward to getting to know my Rebel.

Ian congratulations.

I am moving so slow on my construction that I get discouraged with myself. Then, a nice email like yours comes in that gives additional motivation.

Congrats Ian!

It is great to hear of other builder's completions! Sometimes I make the
mistake of looking at all the chapters in the builders manual that are still
ahead of me. Then I read about another completion and get charged up again!

Have fun, you've earned it!

Congratulations Ian !!!!

And NOW the FUN begins !!!! :-) :-) :-)

Don't worry about the stall - many Rebels will go right
down to ZERO on the dial before stalling ! The Rebel flies through
such a wide range of angles that it's hard to get a good reading
for all. (A wide (like 5/16" ID) pitot tube will help ....)
Cruise should be in the 90 - 100 mph range, depending on prop.
The 912 needs at least 200 hr. to break in, so count on re-pitching
the prop every 100 hr. or so, as it develops more power !!

The 912 rebel is pretty amazing - I could fly level at
30 mph, with full flap and about 3/4 power ..... and roll into
steep turns left and right without ANY problems !!!

It WILL spin - and VERY quickly, too, after the first turn.
Take an EXPERIENCED instructor along if you haven't done these
in a while !!!

Have fun !!! (I KNOW you will !! :-) )

G'day

Thanks Bob.

The stall speed, and the speed range is amazing! I don't know just what
speed that it stalls at but the speed goes right off the
dial!

The top speed at the moment is 75k. I'm sure that this will change as the
engine frees up and I get the right prop pitch.
WIth the pitot, I used the standard Murphy one. I will check the diameter
and see just what it is.

I have not had the chance to really try out the handling, but was amazed at
just how well mannered the Rebel is. It really is a well balanced plane.

I'm sure that it will spin! When we get it sorted out some more my
instructor is keen to try some spins. Can't wait!

As yo say, the fun begins!

G'day Murray

Thanks for your thoughts.

I must admit that things were a little tough at the start, but no-one said that life must be fair!
I was a little sad that I could not share the first flight with those two friends, however I did carry their pictures in my wallet. They were there in spirit at least!

I am now looking forward to getting the Rebel sorted out as soon as possible. However winter is just about on us and the weather has taken
a turn for the worst. Today was quite chilly, about 20Oc.
