Moose Door Frame Installation

Post by Don Boardman » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Hi Guys,

Started on the doors tonight. A question.

In fitting the 1" square tube frames to the door opening I find that the
bottom of the bottom frame will not fit flush with the fuselage's bottom
sill when the vertical legs are flush with the front and rear vertical door
sills. The problem is that the two bottom corners and sill protrude out from
the plan of the rest of the door. The layers of Aluminum in this area cause
the problem. If I move the bottom of the door frame out to fit flush with
the corner areas and the bottom fuselage sill the upright legs of the frame
tilt back to the inside of the cabin starting at about 7" up the legs (just
above the lower hinge location). The tops of the frame legs are displaced to
the inside about 5/8 ".

Do I Keep the bottom of the frame flush and bend the legs starting at the 7"
height, to the out side, to meet the plan of the fuselage? Other options?

Does anyone have any info on the Domed Window that is available?

Moose Door Frame Installation

The legs do require bending, top and bottom until everything matches the
door opening. I did my bending adjustments where the existing bends already
were and that worked fine. Just went back and forth from the vise to the
door over and over again until they matched the door opening. Then a couple
of small adjustments on the bench to make the top and bottom meet in the
middle.

Moose Door Frame Installation

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Oh, one other thing. Both Rob Merdes here in Fairbanks and myself had the
same problem with the doors not seating nicely against the side of the
fuselage after they were built. Rob told me that he clamped his doors on
his table and "tweaked" them, basically with brute force, until they seated
against the fuselage. I haven't tried it yet, but it worked for him and I
am hopeful.
