choosing a propeller

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Hey, Bob, I'm thinking of getting another prop for my Rebel, too. Can you
provide the RPM's for the 54 vs 56 at full power static, or take-off (not
climb), also top RPM's for straight and level at the reflex position for
both props? I assume, the 54 would be redlined? Is it the 150 HP 0320 that
you have?

My current Warp Drive is serving me well for now, with decent climb and
cruise, but don't believe it is high performance by any means. There are
some smaller higher altitude lakes that I would like to visit, so will need
all the power I can get for take-off. I don't really care about cruise.

Would a 76 diameter finer pitch be even better or is too much for a 150 hp
0320?

Hi Shira !

You could go for a compromise prop - there are 3 pitches
of Sensenich metal prop recommended for the Rebel.

74" diameter x 54, 56, or 58 inch pitch

The 54 is climb, and the 58 is cruise - I have the 56" on
my O-320. It seems to work well for both - climb is about 1,500 fpm,
with 2 aboard, and cruise is about 125 mph at 2,450 rpm, with faired gear.

I hope to use this prop on amphibs this summer, and don't
expect any problems.

choosing a propeller

Walter, just a quick 2 cents from me. Sensenich won't sell you a 76" for
your O-320 as they haven't certified one for the application. McCauley has a
76 x 52 for the 172/177 that worked fairly well on Howard's 150 HP Rebel,
but the 74 x 52 Sensenich he went with most recently works better (and as
far as I'm concerned it's too fine!)!

Walter, Howard's is a 150 HP O-320-E2D just like Bob's. We will be getting
her back out in the next week, or so, and at that time I will get a full
power ground run number for you.

Bob Patterson

choosing a propeller

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Hi Walter !

I have the 150 hp. O-320 (by far the most popular choice
hereabouts - several reasons). The 74 x 56 Sensenich gives approx.
2500 - 2550 rpm at takeoff, and it will pull redline(+) in level flight,
reflexed 2 notches, if you wait a while.

Personally, I don't think I will want anything finer on
amphibs, but if you really want a bit more, I guess the 54" will
give it. The trade-off will be about 5 - 8 mph in cruise, though,
I suspect.

Some float pilots like the Borer props, which are very long,
and fine pitched - theoretically ideal, but Sensenich hasn't made
or tested anything like that for the O-320. Since the only reason
for dumping the Warp Drive was to get more reliability, I wouldn't
want to experiment again (at $3,000 a throw !!) ;-) :-)

We'll see - with luck, I hope to get out to Chilliwack in
June to get my amphibs, so we'll have a chance to compare then.

Yeah, if you're coming out in June, we should try to meet up. I feel like I
owe you a dinner and/or beers at the least, after all the tips and help from
you on this list.

We'll see - with luck, I hope to get out to Chilliwack in
June to get my amphibs, so we'll have a chance to compare then.

choosing a propeller

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Hi Brad !

If everything works out, I hope to be in Colorado in June
to test-fly a new Rebel belonging to John Patten ... if it's finished.
I believe he's in the southern part of Colorado. I'll try to stop
by Colorado Springs, too, to visit friends and maybe do some gliding.

Once I know where we are, I'm sure John wouldn't mind you
looking at his Rebel. Glad you've decided to buy one - they're
a GREAT airplane !!! :-)

Drop me a line off-list if you have more questions about
options, etc.
