Andair Fuel Selector Please post pictures

Post by Fred Darnell » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:38 pm

OK. I've posted a few pictures of my fuel system installation around the
Andair selector. Find them in the archives under : Super Rebel Systems.

Let me know if anyone's interested in seeing a specific area closer or from
a better angle.

Mike Kimball

Andair Fuel Selector Please post pictures

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:39 pm

Nice pictures, but boy am I confused. In one photo there looks like there
are two fuel lines passing just to the left (pilot's side) of the elevator
push tube between stations 2 and 3, apparently on the way to the firewall,
but they aren't there at all in another photo. One of the two lines must
not be fuel since only one fuel line would go from the Andair selector to
the engine. Also, I have trial fitted my Andair selector in the same place
that yours is and there is no way that there is room for mine to fit above
the elevator push tube with it recessed in a cup like yours, due to the
selector outlet being on the bottom. Even without recessing it there is not
room for the fitting on the bottom of the selector. How did you do it?

The only place that looks like it would work for me is between stations 2
and 3 on the left hand side, which would probably put the selector between
my legs. This would probably put the plane in a dive every time I went to
switch tanks since my head would probably hit the stick. I'd like to put it
right in the middle between stations 2 and 3 but I would have to raise it up
a bit above the floor level to do this. This presents a problem with the
inlets to the selector since they have to be below the floor level.

Again, what's the secret to your location with the elevator push tube and
rudder cables in the way? Can you take another photo of that area?

Lastly, are you using any electric boost pumps? I'm still thinking of at
least one electric pump. Perhaps even two, one on each side just after the
belly drains below the rear door posts. I have already run my fuel lines
inside the door posts and that worked great. I was thinking of getting a
split master/alternator switch and using it for the pumps. Then I could
easily select both pumps or either one independently. Probably overkill.
The Facet pump that Aircraft Spruce sells looks like the one I want. Anyone
know if the Facet pumps flow OK when not running? I have heard that they
do.

Thanks,

Mike Kimball

Andair Fuel Selector Please post pictures

Post by Fred Darnell » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:39 pm

OK, I've uploaded four more from different angles. Check out FDFUELs01
through 04. The other lines are brake lines. Everything does fit. The
flexible hose you see in one of the pictures has a 90 fitting on the fuel
selector end. Also, it helps to have ordered the Andair selector with male
fittings on all three ports. In one of the pictures you'll see where I've
left room for my Weldon fuel pump. It will be mounted on a reinforcing tray
riveted across the space you see there spanning the gap between the lower
channels. If this doesn't clear it up feel free to contact me directly.

Andair Fuel Selector Please post pictures

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:39 pm

Mike,

The faucet pumps (so I was told by a salesrep) do have a bypass so they can
be installed "in line" without the need to plumb a separate fuel line, with a
back valve, around them.

If you install a fuel pump you will need to install a fuel pressure gauge to
make sure the pump is working. I would use the fuel sender type that mount on
the firewall and are read electronicly so you don't have to pipe fuel
directly into a the cockpit and instrument.

Thanks very much Bruce. Saves me the trouble of trying to find out myself.
I'll still experiment with one to see for myself, on the bench, whether fuel
flows relatively unrestricted through the pump when it is not pumping. Fuel
pressure is a good idea. Sender outside the cockpit is an even better idea.
Sometimes fuel in the cockpit is hard to avoid in a crash anyway. The one
and only ground loop I have under my belt was in a Cessna 150 taildragger.
The right main gear eventually crumpled and in the process severed the fuel
line upstream of the shutoff valve. All the remaining fuel leaked out in
the space under the cabin floor. Luckily, most ended up on the ground, but
you could sure smell it in the cockpit! I would recommend not routing fuel
lines under the gear attach points as was done with the C-150 taildragger.
Probably wasn't a problem when the mains were back in their original
location. Now I wonder about my belly drains in a crash. Hey, why don't I
just avoid crashing??!!

Mike

MIKE the fuel pressure gage I have is an in line unit, that T's off to the gage. Theirs a bellows in the sender that pushes on the fluid you have in the line running to the gage. In that line that operates the gage I filled with antifreeze. One less chance of a fuel leak in the cabin.
