When I first decided on the M14 I was concerned about an engine that had a
600 hour TBO. There is some confusion in the translation of the Russian
definition of overhaul. I believe the 600 hour inspections are Inspect and
Replace As Necessary (IRAN) not a overhaul or TBO time limit.

M14P TBO or IRAN
M14P TBO or IRAN
Quite possible Scott! I have the log for my engine since new and it goes
back to Zero hours at every one of these "overhauls" so I am assuming they
are not just IRAN's. Depending on where the motors are coming from it could
just be "their" overhaul schedule, no different than most militarys. With my
UTVA 66's, out of the Yugoslava Airforce, the entire airframe was torn down
to the last bolt every 500 hours, engine/prop overhauled etc. Same as our
Canadian military where my brother always complained that just after getting
the last bug out of his Herc they would tear the engines off it for overhaul
(away before their time!)!!

M14P TBO or IRAN
Hi Guys,
The Russians and the Czechs (and the Poles) all used a 500(or 600 hr. in
some cases)or 5 years as a time to overhaul. This is the military thinking
for zero field maintenance and almost zero failure rates. The key is the
zero field maintenance part. We do 100 hr or annual inspections on our
engines and presumably we would check mags, cylinder=n= compressions and
the like. They did NOT do this in the former East block. They had very
little field maintenance. Thus the 5 yr/500 Hr. schedule. The overhauls that
they did under the old system consisted of disassembly, inspection of parts
to limits and replacement of any worn parts. So it was not a "new Limit"
overhaul that we think of. It is more like an IRAN. Be careful of any
"overhauls" that came out of Russia after 1992 or so. Many of them are just
LOG book overhauls. The official with the rubber stamp made a little money
on the side. I have seen several of these.
We have been feeding the Romanian engine factory money to establish the TBO
that we are quoting (1,500 Hrs.) They have run one of my 400 Hp. engines
about 300 hrs now. They disassemble it every 100 hrs or so to inspect the
wear patterns. They simply put it back together and run it again. The
program is taking a long time as I have to fund the 100LL there ( at $4.20 /
gal.) and supply the Aeroshell oils for the testing.
Another factor in the short "TBO" of the Eastern Block engines was their
rotten Russian engine oil. LOM, a Czech manufacturer of the wonderful in
line engines, gives two different TBO's on their engines depending on
weather you run it on western oils or Russian oils. The TBO with western
oils is 50% longer. Over there you often see labels on aircraft that warn to
use only ELF or Aeroshell oil. This is to permit the longer TBO.
Hope this answers some of the questions.
