Post by dasstolguy » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

I am deciding on features for a Rebel kit before prices go up. The mission is
Intermediate bush (wheels) eventually floats; thinking 8.5-6 main tires. In
the Aircraft Spruce catalog, Scott tailwheels model 3200 and 3400 are offered.
The catalog states that the 3400 is more heavy duty ?designed for use with
tube spring mounting?.

Questions:
1)
Is tube spring mounting possible on a Rebel? How?
2)
Pros cons of tube spring vs leaf spring?
3)
Pros cons of model 3200 vs 3400?
4)
Tips on matching tailwheel to mains?
5)
Would tailwheel selection affect main gear selection ( bungee, coil, spring)?

Wayne,

Thanks for the quick reply with more value added than the GST/OPT every gave me.

Sounds like leaf spring, Scott 3200, grease, and some mods.

About the mods
THE (FUS-31 DOUBLER) "ONTARIO" TAIL WRAP MOD AS WE CALL IT AND THE SERVICE
BULLETIN FOR THE TAIL POST!

When ordering a new Rebel kit
1) Do I get the materials for a FUS-31 Doubler and tailpost service bulletin?
If not does Murphy swap out stuff from the basic kit such as
keep the tail wheel and wing tips but give me the FUS-31 doubler and some clecos?

Dear Rob ;

G'day from sunny OZ ! :-)

I have a 3400 fitted to our Rebel and a friend, Jim Stonier has a 3200
fitted to his....and they REALLY DO improve the Rebel !!!!!!!!

tube spring mounting?.
Yes it IS heavier built ....but mine is made for a leaf spring type ....(Jim
and I both fitted actual steel springs from a car trailer to our
Rebels)...all of which helps to offset the nose heavy installations with
Lycoming engines too !
Questions:
1)
Is tube spring mounting possible on a Rebel? How?
Don't know...you'd have to make up the braketry yourself for the round
section spring
2)
Pros cons of tube spring vs leaf spring?
I think LEAF is easier....you can add or subtract springs to get the desired
resiliance
3)
Pros cons of model 3200 vs 3400?
The 3400 is just more robustly proportioned (and obviously weighs
more)...and accepts a 10" wheel as well
4)
Tips on matching tailwheel to mains?
Bolts ! (I have 2 X 7/16" bolts )
5)
Would tailwheel selection affect main gear selection ( bungee, coil,
spring)?

I can't see how....I have actually thrown away the bungees cords and have
made it with two heavy duty steel coil springs...works very well and has
LOTS of travel (to save me when I stuff up the landings :-)

Hi Rob,

Well, there you go! Wayne said it all. Could you have expected such a prompt
and complete answer to all your questions? Wayne, if you haven't noticed, is
our "Rebel Resident Expert." He builds them and flies them. Bob P can tell
you a lot about these birds too. He gets to fly more than Wayne. Wayne has to
earn a living, somehow. Bob, well I'm not sure, but I think he works at
flying. Rebels (all models) mostly.

Bob Patterson

Scott Tail wheel

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Hi Rob !

I'm with Wayne ! It's probably not nearly worth the hassle
to switch to the rod mount, and I'd go with the largest tires that
the factory offers, if you want real rough ground capability. The
Scott 3200 is working well on MANY Rebels, and is less expensive
than the 3400, as well as easier to mount.

A thought on "improvements" - you'll add <months> to your
build time - the comments here lately are: "Just get it flying -
homebuilts are NEVER <finished> !" ;-)

After you've flown your Rebel, you will likely find there's
very little you'd like to change - they're really great airplanes !!

At the risk of starting a great flame war, I'd say stick with
the bungee gear (or die springs, IF you do it the RIGHT way !) - <I>
think it's stronger, and better suited for bush work. If it does get
damaged, it will fail in a way that makes the airframe more easily
repairable. (I'll defer to Wayne for his comments on the ease of
repair aspect - he's fixed enough of 'em ! )

.....bobp

PS
You'll be glad that you chose the Rebel for this mission !!

Perhaps the tailwheel mount used on the Super Rebel could be used on the
Rebel. At least the nicely machined brackets and fitting with the round
hole for the tube. Save you having to machine your own.

Usually the odd one that pops up on ebay Neil...but then again considering
our Canadian dollar is marching forward at 80 cents US...might not be worth
the wasted time searching, nor too painful, just buying new direct from
Aircraft Spruce or such. Usually about $549 to $579 US.

Cheers,

Just bought one $1,182:00 in my hand in Calgary.Works great. Watch you
don't over correct when keeping straight. This wheel sticks to the ground a
whole lot more than the MAM wheel. It's really nice on grass when things get
a little ruff.

I know you're asking Murray, Roger, but the only spring to use on the Scott
3200 is the set of tension springs sold specifically for it.

Using "door closer" (compression) springs can be very detrimental to the
life of the steering arm. If you turn around to the left (or right) on a
soft strip and then horse the pedals to the floor to straighten back out,
without rolling forward, the tire sunk into the mud will not turn and you
can bottom the compression spring and put undo strain on the steering arm.
As a matter of fact Howard broke his 3200 steering arm after 5 hrs as he was
adamant that he had to have the compression springs. After breaking the arm
it wasn't hard getting him to spend the $32 for the Scott tension spring
set.

Hi Murray,

When you changed to the Scott 3200 tailwheel did you change tailsprings
also?
If so could you advise what tailspring you are now using?

Thanks,

Roger:

Thanks Wayne. I wasn't aware for the need to have the Scott springs either.
I am using my original springs. I will however get the right ones. Thanks
again Wayne.
