Hi Joel,
I installed gullwing doors on my aircraft, and am quite happy with them.
Pro's? They are up and out of the way for entry, exit, and float ops. I used a bellcrank driving three pins, one forward one aft and one down so the door shuts nice and secure. In the up position the bottom pin goes into a bracket on the the wing. I only ha
d to purchase a few minor pieces to make it work from MAM stock. Along with that, the window is about 2" taller than the original design for great vis. I took extra pains in fitting the skin to the fuse and only had to put one small area of weather seal on th
e co-pilots side because Fife complained so much. The pilots side is fine.
Con's? No window to hang your elbow out. The gullwings in flight open to about a 50deg from the fuse, but I have to lean to far out to push them up against the bottom of the wing, and as you get close the pressure really builds. I never have tried taking o
ff with the doors open. The only other thing is you lose a 2" high 12" long wedge at the doorsill to A post area to allow the door to clear the strut, but that is a non event other than I think it adds some strength to that area(a good thing)
The windows, being larger, really vibrate. I've thought about some bracing, but I hate to lose the view.
Sorry I havn't put together a print of the door yet, but I just havn't had the necessary time. I will get to it someday. When I'm not out flying :) But do keep at it, it's way more fun than should be legal!!! Curt N97MR
