Rebel wing wiring and pitot runs @ strut

Post by Terry Dazey » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

All Rebelheads:

I am planning to run my tip strobe (DC power), landing light and 2 pitot
tubes (clear 1/4 inch vinyl) from the left wing down through the wing
strut. My thought is to make a connection (break) for all tubes and
wiring at the wing skin (strut attach fitting location), then run down
through the strut tube where I will make another connection before the
tubes and wires go into the cabin. Does anyone have any comments,
thoughts and ideas on making multiple connections (at top and bottom
strut)?

For the wire connections, I plan on using waterproof electrical
connectors at both ends of the strut and each pitot tube will get a
straight barbed fitting at the top strut and the MAM suggested 90 degree
where they enter the cabin. Is the extra connection at the top strut
really worthwhile? My thought is that it would make it easier to remove
and replace the wing for assembly, inspection/repair etc. if necessary.

Thanks for the input. GREAT forum!

Rebel wing wiring and pitot runs @ strut

I'm just at this stage as well.. I've decided to run the wires down the
strut, but only use a connector at one end. ie. The wing will have about 6'
of wire attached to it. The "tunnel" down the strut is more than large enough
to pass the wires and assembled connector through. Adding a 2nd connector,
so that there is one at each end of the strut just add to the parts count, and
creates more potential problems. Remember that every connector you install
actually adds 3 joints into the circuit(2 crimps, and the pin-to-socket joint).

I figure for the few times, if ever, that I remove the wings I can just coil up
the 6' of wire coming out of the bottom skin of the wing.. Not that big of a
problem..

Rebel wing wiring and pitot runs @ strut

Terry I think it's good practice to make as few connections as possible in
your wiring. You'll have less places to check when you have a failure. :]
My experience with the vinyl tubing is that it hardens onto the fitting and
must be cut off when you want to remove it so it's probably better to just
leave it a little long and cut it if you ever have to remove your wing.
Instead of using a 90' elbow on your pitot line at the bottom of the wing
strut use a tee fitting with a short peice of hose going down and plugged
at the bottom to collect any moisture that forms in the line. I've had my
airspeed freeze while flying and it's most upsetting.

Rebel wing wiring and pitot runs @ strut

Dave and Drew:

I knew in the back of my pointed little head that the less electrical and air line
connections the better. You both have confirmed this for me.

Removal of the wings on my Long-EZ at annual was mandatory This process was to
check the wing attach bolts, aluminum inserts and glassed hard points for cracks
and delamination. In that project I elected to make an extra connection at the
spar/wing split to make removal MUCH easier. (although annual wing removal is
still a pain).

With the Rebel wing attach points visible with removal of the root and strut
fairings, it seems that complete wing removal would seldom (if at all). Aaaaaaa .
. . another gold star for the Rebel.

I was a little concerned about putting an extra "convenience" split in the wiring,
but now with your suggestions have confirmed my thoughts . . . A single run from
each appliance to the fuselage it is.

Drew: Thanks for the "Tee" water trap hint!

Another BIG thanks to Mike Davis and all who take time to forward their ideas and
thoughts to this group.

Have fun building and flying!
