Hi all,

Well, last night I toasted my W505, W506, and W507
wing attach brackets on my SR wing spar trying to ream
the 7/16" hole. I drilled a hole 1/32 undersize, and
then preceeded to ream the hole with the slowest
possible speed (650 rpm) my drill press will turn at.
The result: an irregular hole full of 'chatter' marks.
Anyone else have any better techniques? Now that the
three straps are toast, I plan on using them to
practice on. As an aside, I drilled a perfect 7/16"
hole with a standard high quality, cobalt, 135 degree
split point drill bit. The AN7 bolt fit very snuggly
in it...in fact I had to carefully give it a push into
the hole. I'm temped just to drill the holes with a
standard drill bit in my drill-press.

Anyone else have good/bad luck with reamers?

Jason,
My standard machists manual says that the hole must be within 0.007in of
final size before reaming, to get a good quality hole . Also I have always
reamed by hand. This seems to give good results. If I am worried about
straightness of the holes I hand turn the reamer in my drill press.

Hi Jason,

your speed was OK maybe a tad fast, 600 rpm would be better (ref Machinery
Handbook). Hole should be drilled about 5 to max. 10 thou undersize (need
number or letter drills). Add cutting oil and feed slow.
Bolt tolerances vary so one can luck out getting a snug fit with just a
drill bit. I ended up using expansion reamers.

Hi Neil and all that replied,

That's exactly what I did. I opened up the top of my
drill press, took the drive belt off, and turned the
pulley by hand. The result - a nice clean hole. Funny
enough, the hole is the same size as the one drilled
in scrap with a 7/16" drill bit. Maybe a few thou
tighter with the reamer...but barely.

I drilled them out also with a drill bit. I talked to Grant at MAM and asked
him why it didn't mention reaming them out as was with the SR2500. He said
that the bolts were overkill in the strength department to compensate for
people modifying an already built aircraft. Therefore, the thought was that
it would be to difficult to get a perfecct hole so they therefore went up to a
much larger and stronger bolt to compensate for this. Grant recommended to me
that I drill them out with the correct size drill bit and not to ream them out.

The same goes with the the new machine fittings that are used on the front
spar for the new attachment fittings. You don't have to ream them out.
However, when you drill the holes out in increments to the final size, make
sure your hole is perfectly straight. It is very easy to drill the hole off
center and because the thickness is so great, you can end up with a hole that
is elongated at the other end.
