Rotax 912

Post by allsure » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

G'day

I am now fitting my Rotax 100S engine and have come to some problems with the plumbing system.

I would appreciate some input as to how to mount the water collector, and just how to route and secure the water hoses. The factory instructions are not particularly helpful, and I would appreciate some thoughts from someone who has actually done this job.

I have followed Wayne's ideas in mounting the radiator, but I just can't seem to get the hoses sitting just nice.

A picture, (or a sketch) would be helpful

Regards and thanks

We all hear you "knocking" Ian, but I think you are the first (on the list anyhow) to install the 912S in a Rebel so you will have to lead the way and share your results with the rest of us when you have solved all the problems associated with making it work!

Best of luck,

Rotax 912

G'day Wayne

I did not realize that I was a "pioneer"!

There has been more than a few problems, but I thought that the engine room would be similar to that for an 80 hp Rotax. I really don't like some of the factory methods of installation, and I really did not want to reinvent the wheel l if all this had been done before.

However I will not give up!

I certainly would be willing to share the way I resolved the problems with the group, if any one was interested.

Ian,

The engine install for the 912 80 HP Rotax should be the same as the 912S 100
HP. You could literally unbolt the 80 HP and bolt on the 100 HP. If it wasn't
for the different color rocker covers you could not tell the two engines
apart.

Rotax 912

Sorry Bruce, but it ain't that simple. MAM's set up for the 912 relies on a
simple double exhaust on each side of the engine. To put the 912S to it's
full utilization you need the 4 into 1 tuned exhaust (and really should use
the tuned intake, but not mandatory) and that's going to be tough to fit
with the radiator slung, the full length, below the engine.

Rotax 912

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

Hi Wayne and Ian,

You're correct, I'm sure, that every plane has its particular installation
for a given engine. However, the 912 and 912S are identical engines on the
outside. The differences are internal. If you have a 912 installed on your
plane now, it's as easy as unbolting one and putting on the other.

I realize Ian is starting from scratch and has to invent his own install kit,
or follow MAM's which I figure, after listening to Ian, is not very
inclusive. I wish I could be more helpful to you Ian, with your installation,
but I don't think my Kitfox experience would be of much use to you.

Be careful where you rout those carburetor vents (from the factory location)
that leak all over your exhaust if your carburetor's flood. And they do flood
from the shaking this engine produces because of its light weight and high
compression. Low mass props like the Warp Drive do nothing to dampen this
shaking that you will notice mostly on start up and shut down. These vents
are very atmospheric sensitive and routing them outside the cowling will
create a lower pressure in the carburetor bowl and could cause you problems,
like a dead engine. Not fun, trust me, I learned the hard way. Don't even
stick the vents in a larger tube and rout this larger tube out the cowling.
It doesn't work!

There is a new service bulletin last month on checking for cracks in the
carburetor boots. You should safety wire your carburetor boots to the engine
as well. Or better yet, tap and screw some tabs and attach two more springs
to each carburetor. Skystar has a kit with instructions for this procedure.
They would probably sell it to you if you asked them.

There is a "mandatory" service bulletin on the rocker spring retainers (they
can break and get ingested) that game out early this year. Check the Rotax
web site to see if your engine is effected. Most are. If your engine is new
you must do this service before your first run up.

All that said... I do love this engine and I'm sure you will too. Just keep
those carburetors synchronized and she'll purr like a kitten.

One more thing, Rotax now recommends Motor cycle oil with gear additives. No
more Mobil One. Use something like Castrol GT. or Honda Gold. Rotax has a
special service bulletin on these oils and there recommendations for use
based on your climate. You can access it on their Web sight, I'm sure.

Blue skies and tail winds

Rotax 912

Post by allsure » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

G'day Bruce

Thanks for your response and inspiration.

I don't know about the dimensions of the 912, but the dimensions all appear
similar. There are differences but apparently
it does not make much difference to the mounting (etc)

The Factory instructions are not all that bad, but it would be easier if I
could see an installation that has already been done.
The way the factory suggest is just untidy in my opinion. Unfortunately
there are no 912 Rebels in Australia for me too look at.

Thanks for the tip on the routing of the carburettor vents. I was vaguely
aware that the positioning was important as a friend had engine trouble with
his 912 when he extended the tube. It ran rough! I will leave them as is.

I will wire the carbs and boots and will fit extra springs. Seems like
cheap Insurance to me!

My engine must have the retainers changed and the dealer has sent them to me
to fit. I will do it next weekend. Doesn't seem to be too big a job.

The carbs should not be a problem as I have had some previous experience
with dual carbs, which will come in handy.I have set up the throttle cabled
and have got them opening at the same time. That's half the problem
overcome.

I haven't yet sorted out the oil, but I was aware that they recommended an
oil with additives for the gear box.

Back to the workshop!

Regards

Ian Donaldson

Bruce, in the future you should probably upload files like this to the file
libraries instead of posting to the list. At 452KB this is a pretty large
file for some users who still connected with an analog modem... not to
mention that times 173 list members thats roughly 78MB when the mail server
posts 173 copies. Network was at a crawl for about 20 minutes pushing all
those messages out. I'm not trying to bawl you out, just want you to know,
most people don't realize. A good rule of thumb when sending images is to
try and keep it under 100KB. Remember, there are still a lot of people out
there who only connect at 33.6 or slower.

Sorry, Mike, for the large file. I knew it was a biggy but I don't have the
knowledge to down size or upload files to the library. Next time I'll take
time to learn to up load to the library. There never seems to be enough time.

Mike,

I have lots of digital pictures of my rebel in progress I'm sure might be of
interest to others. I'm fixing the cowling now. I just don't know how to get
the pictures uploaded to the library. I know how important it is to see
pictures when your building.

Thanks Bruce !

Now I can see the major problem Ian is wrestling with - those
exhaust pipes run right through the area where the Rebel 912 cowl
has the radiator positioned. It's the rad from a VW Rabbit, so it
takes a lot of room ! Maybe the pipe angles can be raised a bit
to give clearance ....

Uploading is no biggy, anyone can log onto the site with username "rebel"
and password "builder"... just like your going to look at the message
archives. Then just click on "file libraries", then click "upload". Enter
a description, browse to the file... just like you did to attach the file to
a message... then click upload. That's it!
