rudder trim

Post by capete@sympatico.ca » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

Thanks for the info Al. Now, I'm afraid you have aroused my curiosity..

How did you make the channels to attach the piano hinge for the trim?
Did you use ribs? Do you have any pics you can send me or post to the
list? Why did you position the MAC servo where you did and not in the
rudder itself?

rudder trim

Post by Al & Deb Paxhia » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

Peter,
The channels were bent on a small brake/roll/shear combo made by Jet. There
are two ribs one at each end of the tab. I don't remember if these were bent
up or scrap off cuts from other ribs. I did not put the servo in the rudder
to keep the added weight in the rudder to a minimum. Also the thin skin on
the rudder seemed to light for mounting without adding structure. Also was
thinking that at annual time when the tail fairing is off the servo can be
inspected. I will shoot some pictures and upload them this weekend.

Peter,
I have uploaded pictures of the trim tab and servo. They are in the tail
feathers section.

Rhodes

Rudder Trim

Post by Rhodes » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:24 pm

I may have missed something here but why not just put tension on the rudder cable up between the seats instead of a tab on the rudder? I discussed this with Brian Godden a while back and he agreed. It works well on the Cessna's and Boeing's.

Hi Steve !

An even better idea - why not just leave the airplane the way
it was designed ??!!! This is a lot of extra work for little gain,
- unless you just like 'toys', and adding complexity (which reduces
safety !). The extra weight aft of the hinge also increases the
risks of flutter - not necessarily a lot, but it IS a change !

The rudder forces are not heavy in the SR/Moose, and are
easily handled by rudder pressure at high-torque times, and can be
taken care of by a fixed tab, IF necessary, later.

I hardly noticed that the M-14P turned the 'wrong' way !!
There was no huge rudder pressure change involved.

As we keep saying to other builders :

"Get it FLYING !!! It'll NEVER be "FINISHED" .... "

Keep working on it steadily, and try to avoid these side-tracks -
they'll just slow you down !! :-)

Rudder Trim

Springs work great but you have to re-adjust for every change in airspeed. Pressure on a tab varies with airspeed. Also, it's hard to arrange a spring system that maintains a constant tension throughout rudder travel.
