Rotax 912 supplies

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi Everybody !

I've collected all the numbers for various bits for the 912-powered
Rebel that I've used over the years. Might be handy to have in one place,
considering it might be sold soon.....
(It's advertised in Sept. COPA for only $47,000, and I've already had
<2> (lowball) offers !)

I hope some of these might be useful for those of you already
building or flying Rebels with the Rotax 912 (or 912-S). <I> think
that this is a GREAT recipe for a FUN flying machine that is CHEAP to
run ! Cruise at 97 mph, stall at 30, carry hundreds of pounds of camping
gear, and burn only 3 gallons/hour of auto fuel !!! Hard to beat !
And, it performs very well on Murphy 1500 straight floats, too !
(See the front of the Murphy brochure ! ;-) )

All of these are for the Rotax 912.

Here are the numbers for oil filters I've used:
-----------------------------------------------

Canadian Tire 17-1748-8

Fram PH3614

NAPA 1348

Purolator FC603

K-Mart K0241

Oil is :
---------

Canadian Tire 2000 Synthetic 15-50

Mobil 1 Synthetic 20-50

Castrol GTX 20-50

Castrol GTX 40 (for hot summer conditions)

The spark plugs I now use are:
------------------------------

NGK DCPR7E - from an auto parts jobber, in boxes of 10 (~$2.50 ea.)

The battery is:
---------------

Canadian Tire CTC-27-1014-0 (12-N14-3A)
(Motorcycle/lawn tractor)

Exhaust stack extentions: (for stock Murphy mufflers)
--------------------------

Canadian Tire CTC 12-8590B/07770 (1 1/2" ID)

Ignition key switch:
--------------------

Echlin KS 6180 (from automotive jobber)

Prop is:
--------

GSC ground adjustable 2 blade - 72", model M670 (pitch is about 40")
(GSC also has a NICE variable-pitch prop for about $1,500 !)
--------------

Brake fluid is:
---------------

Canadian Tire Automotive automatic transmission fluid (Dextron II)
----------------------------

Hope some of this is useful - please pass it on.

G'day Bob

Thanks for the part numbers for the your 912 Rebel. I am building an 9121S
and I'm sure they will be helpful.

Do you favor any particular oil?

Rotax 912 supplies

Hi Ian !

You should have a real "hot rod Rebel" !! The 'S' should give
you dazzling performance .... it certainly would be <my> choice for
a fun flying machine !

I suppose you really should follow Rotax's suggestions .....
My preference is to run regular Castrol GTX 20-40 oil for the first
hundred or 200 hours, so the engine gets to "break in", then switch to
a synthetic 20-50 for less wear. The Nicasil cylinders on the 912
are fantastic ! They take a LONG time to break in - mine was getting
better every 200 hours. It was developing more power, and required
re-pitching the prop to avoid over-revving, even at 600 hours !
I hear there's a 912 in Germany with over 3,600 hours on it so far,
still going strong !

Not sure what brands you can get there, but Mobil 1 Synthetic
is one I like. We've used Canadian Tire 2000 Synthetic 20-50 for most
of the last 10 years, but you won't have Canadian Tire stores there ! :-)
(It is made for CTC by Mobil, so is likely very similar ....)

One of our builders here is using Honda motorcycle oil in
20-40 weight. Apparently the Honda oil is specially formulated to
be good to gears, as the motorcycle transmissions run in engine oil,
as do the Rotax re-drives. Might be a good choice.

If your temps (outside air) are in the 80's (Frankenstein),
or high 20's (Centipede), you might want to run STRAIGHT (not multi-grade)
40 weight oil, as single grade oils have been proven to do a better
job at high temperatures. Also, I would not go any thinner than
10W30 (or stright 30), no matter how cold it gets - I swear I can hear
the gears grinding with the new 5W50 and 0W40 oils !!! If it is
<that> cold, you really should pre-heat anyway.

PS - I'm NOT sure if the filters I use on the 912 would be safe for
the 912-S. To be safe, check with Rotax - if the "S" uses the SAME
filter as the regular 912, I'd guess you're OK.... and those number
I sent could save you some money !

Rotax 912 supplies

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi Ian,

I have a 912S on my Kitfox and started with Mobil one as per the
recommendation of Rotax. They later changed and started recommended Castrol
GTX motor cycle oil with gear additive to help the gear box, as engines using
Mobil 1 were showing significant signs of gear wear after 1200 to 1500 hours.
Honda Gold is another. I don't suppose one is any better than the other just
be sure to use a good grade motor cycle patrolium/synthetic mix with gear
additives. They are not cheap oils! Try $8.00 US per quart.

Bob and Ian,

Yes, the 912S uses the same oil filter as the 912. Be careful with your oil
filters though, and make sure they have an internal by pass in case they are
plugged. Not all car filters do. NAPA Gold is one filter that says on the box
it has a By pass. I use it myself.

Rotax 912 supplies

G'day Bob

I sure hope that my 912s Rebel is satisfactory. It seems that your 80hp
Rebel performs OK, and
if my Rebel goes as good I will be very pleased with it.

Now that oil choice has now become even more complicated!
There has been some good input from other listers. What I will do now is sit
and have
a good think about it all. Other Rotax users here have used all the oils
mentioned with
good success.

Thankfully our temps are mostly +20oC in the Summer time. Winter is always
mild
and I have never seen snow or even a good frost. A straight grade oil may be
a good choice.

I have not checked the filters with our local dealer, but will do so.

Regards

Ian Donaldson

Any update to this? I know the oil has changed. Are spark plugs and oil
filters still the same?

Walter
