Painting the Rebel

G'day

I'm about to start preparing my Rebel for painting and I am looking for some tips. (I would like to get it right the first time)

I propose to use the painter at an automotive repair shop to do the job, but they are not really experienced in spraying aircraft.

Does any one have suggestions as to what process I should use.

I also want to install the skylights (etc) before painting and would like appreciate some advice on what sealant that I should use.

Hi Ian !

The windshield manufacturer recommends Bostick 1100 adhesive -
it comes in tubes for caulking guns, in several colours. (Black or
gray would work well ...)

Many builders use automotive paint with good results - I've
used (and will use again), an epoxy enamel from RM (they only sell
to the auto trade). It is now called "UNA", and is the middle grade
of their line - a good balance of cost and quality. Hope you can
get it there. (PPG Durathane is also common) The important factor
is cleaning and etching the aluminum, and getting a good primer
coat - most paint manufacturers recommend a complete system of
paint, primer, and sealer.

DO <NOT> use System 3 water-based urethane paints - we have
heard from 5 builders who have had really bad experiences with this
stuff ! They have had sections of paint literally FALL OFF within
months, while other areas can't be removed with a chisel !! Not
worth the risk !!

I have painted several planes with PPG Deltron with very good results. It is more forgiving than Durathane as I do all my painting outside (I wet down the ground and do it when there is no wind to keep dust down). I use DP 40 primer (Also PPG) and just scuff down the aluminum with scotchbright pads and solvent.

G'day Ian !

We did the Rebel in Spray Chief 2 pack....looks pretty good !

It's made here in South OZ.....and is reasonably priced.

It cost us about $2,000 in total for paint for 541R and most of the plane
has only two coats of paint on it.

If you need to know more...give me a call on 0416 041 007...(I'm quite often
on
a boat)

PS...back in the air again...did 2.6 hrs today...had to add 15Kgs to the
tail :-(...
partly to offset the metal prop we borrowed and just fitted...and partly to
move the empty C of G back 3"....

It now "FLARES" nicely....and STILL has nice / docile stall characteristics
!!!
