Hi from Calgary:

Thanks Bob for your Subaru recommendation, I'll take a closer look at this. There are some excellent engine shops here. Will let you know what I find out.

Hi All

Speaking of engines does anyone know anything about Bradley aerospace and
their VW engines, web pages shows 2800cc engine with 215 ft/lbs , 143 hp at
3500 rpm. They claim to have engines with more horse power in their add in
kit planes.

web link is as follows

Mike
I know nothing of Bradley, but I did note that the numbers below appear
to be off a software engine simulator printout posted on their website.
They are not dynometer numbers, simply a prediction that can be made to
say anything by manipulating the data. Those predictions can be in the
ball park if done properly, and they are great for predicting the effect
of specific changes to an engine. They are only a prediction until
proven on a dyno though. And of course low speed thrust and efficiency
is better with a larger diameter prop... Note the relatively poor
performance of the Jabiru compared to a geared down Rotax 912 on slow
speed Rebel type aircraft.

Even if you <could> get 143 hp. <reliably> out of a VW - to run

much use out of it on a Rebel ....

I used to turn 3200 rpm on my KR-2 with a Warnke "Almost Constant Speed"
prop and Revmaster VW conversion. Worked great. The extra 300 rpm could
make a big difference I suppose.

Hi Tom !

I've CC'd the maillist, as there seems to be a bit of interest
in these engines !

George Coy is President of Gesoco Industries Inc., the company
that Murphy buys their M-14P's from. He dabbles in all sorts of
engines and accessories. You can reach him at:

http://www.gesoco.com
or:
http://www.gesoco.com/M14P_Engines/M14P_Today.htm

These engines are Lycoming IO-540-G1D5's, and I believe they're
rated at 290 hp stock. They include fuel system, mags, starter, alternator,
and prop. governor. Props <might> be available for the first few -
better move fast, though, as 3 have already been sold !!

There are 14 left, with times from zero, 1.3 hr., to about
about 1300 hrs., with several in the 700 - 900 range. As I mentioned,
it can be a good idea to do your test flying with a well run engine,
so you can concentrate on the airplane, without the headaches of
trying to fly wide-open for 2 hours for break-in !

Kitplanes recently had an article on the shops who overhaul
and prepare the engines for the Harmon Rockets - this might be a
good way to go. You'd get a balanced, polished & ported engine
with about 330 hp., after a season of flying....

that other radial (M-462?). Could you send me some more info on these
engines, or how to contact George? Are they actual Lycoming engines? If
so, have they been modified to 290 hp or?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Honda and Teledyne to Study Business Opportunities For Honda's
Next-generation Piston Aviation Engine
Monday March 3, 9:00 pm ET

TOKYO, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Honda Motor Co., Ltd., announced today that
Honda and Teledyne Continental Motors, Inc. (TCM) will begin a joint market
feasibility study for a next-generation piston aviation engine currently in
development by Honda. Over the next several months, the joint study will
evaluate potential business opportunities for both parties to work together
toward marketing, servicing and manufacturing, and identifying potential
product launch customers for such engines for the general aviation market.

The announcement follows approximately two years of cooperation between the
two companies on the testing of a prototype Honda designed piston aviation
engine at the Mobile, Alabama facility of TCM. Honda's piston aviation
engine technologies derive from its research and development of motorcycles
and automobiles. With support in the development process based on TCM's
aviation expertise and know-how, Honda has developed a prototype piston
aviation engine that has achieved the technical potential for being
significantly advanced over currently available engines in terms of weight,
fuel efficiency, power output and emissions. Honda, TCM and Teledyne
Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=tdy&d=t>TDY
- <http://biz.yahoo.com/n/t/tdy.html>News), the parent company of TCM, have
agreed to conduct a joint feasibility study as the next step in their
relationship.

The general aviation power plants include piston, turbo-prop, and turbo-fan
engines. In addition to turbo-fan engines Honda has been researching since
1986, Honda has also been researching and developing more cost effective
piston aviation engines since 2000.

Honda is one of the world's leading producers of mobility products
including automobiles, motorcycles and power products. This diverse product
line-up has made Honda the world's preeminent engine-maker, with production
of more than 15 million engines globally in 2002.

Teledyne Technologies is a leading provider of sophisticated electronics
components, instruments and communication products, systems engineering
solutions, and aerospace engines and components and on-site gas and power
generation systems.

Teledyne Continental Motors, Inc., is a leading provider of new,
re-manufactured, and overhauled piston aircraft engines, ignition systems,
spare parts and aviation batteries for the General Aviation industry.

Hi Mike !

If this is the same piston engine they were talking about
4 years ago, it's a 6 cyl. of about 250 -300 hp, CERTIFIED, and
MUCHO $$,$$$ - aimed for the light twin market, and WAY too
heavy for a Rebel......

Mattituck lists an 0-320 on their web site. The R-263 five cylinder
radial (distributed by Gesoco) by the makers of the M14P next spring is
supposed to be out in a 180 hp supercharged powerplant. The R-263 (125
hp version) is 220 lb and the 180 hp version they think will come in at
230-240 lb. Interesting.
