[rebel-builders] engine mount

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:34 pm

Below is a comment I made 8/24/2010 during the last time this subject
came up.
Ken

"I dug up a MAM diagram for the 0-235 and I believe it is the same mount
for the 0-320. It shows one degree of right offset and zero down thrust.

However you might check to see if I put anything in the archives (as I
often do) about 8 years ago. Reason is because I measured a conical
mount and my less than perfect memory recalls 1 or 2 degrees of right
offset and 1 or 2 degrees of downthrust. I can't find anything
definitive in my notes. For low power cruise with the soob and wing
cuff, the down thrust and offset was a good thing to put in my mount
from what I've seen. However I would not hesitate to use 1 or 2 offset
and zero downthrust if I was building an 0-320 mount."

schaumr@dcsol.com wrote:
Hi All,

I am getting ready to have an engine mount built for my 6-cyl Corvair engine.
It'll produce about 120hp, and weigh a bit less than an O-200 installed.
Virtually all Corvair mounts are bed mounts, and I've decided to have William
Wynne (of flycorvair.com) weld it up for me. He has welded Corvair mounts
for a number of othe aircraft, and I am looking for reference materials to
provide to him: schematics (if possible), thrust lines, distances from firewall
for CG, etc...

I am hoping someone has a schematic of a Rebel with an O-235 engine install
(or even an O-320) to get a sense of the required dimensions.

Can anyone tell me if these documents exist?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Thanks Ken, John and others for answering questions so quickly.

John sent me the actual diagram for the O-235, so that will work nicely.
I'm going to see if I can upload it to the 'files' section.

This may be another option. I doin't know about the O-290 but I understand
my O-235 engine case mounts were converted from a stright mount to a
dynafocol through an STC #SE1051SW.

We have a kit that came with the dynafocol mount. But we came across an
0290 zero timed cheap that takes a straight mount. Anyone out there give
me some measurements for making a straight mount? distance from firewall,
angles, anything would help.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim
After I read your e-mail again I realize that the O-290 you are looking at
has ALREADY been zeroed. STC is no longer an option.

Bob Patterson

[rebel-builders] Engine mount

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:51 pm

Hi Jim !

Do yourself a big favour and toss that O-290 !!

There's a reason they are cheap - $2K - $4K -- TOPS !!

They haven't been built since 1954, and parts are VERY hard
to get ... IF you find them, they will be more than 5 times the
price of O-320 parts .... AND - you WILL need them - old O-290's
were famous for swallowing valves ! I have heard of O-290-G
engines (ground power units for generators) with pistons
limited to 1,400 rpm max .... There are some of these out there !

It's heavier than an O-320, with a lot less power ....
If/WHEN it quits, you can end up damaging your aircraft !

and got a zero timed 320 conical mount out of Kamloops for a very reasonable
price. The shop still had the parts on order to rebuild and sell the engine, more
than a year later they still never had them, I think they gave up on it.

I had an 0-290D in my rebel for a few years never had any trouble with it at all but it's performance once I went to floats was just marginal. I changed to an ECI titan 0-320. I think Wayne was making a jig for conical engines.

The 0-290D (out of a Super Cub) in my Rebel 049, seized a valve, chewed a hole in the head, caused the engine to stop @7500' while returning to Ontario from Sun nFun /99.
Made the long glide into the nearest airstrip, Dekalb GA (to the delight of their scrambled volunteer fire crew after I declared an emergency). I've got pictures!
Just made the airport property. Very exciting at the time.
Spent days and lots of money fixing it to get home.

Very happy with the similar weighing 0-320 A2B I replaced it with. Performance improvement was exceptional!

Hi Jim I have a rebel with a 290 installed but I did not build it and it is new to me. I have the cowl off and can take pics and measu rements easily enough. This motor has the straight mount also. Please advise with what you need,I will probably not be able to give mount angles.

I'm following up on Jim's question, asking if anyone has dimensions for an
0320 mount? Has MAM ever provided these measurements generically so that
one could make their own mount, either dynafocal or conical? I'm looking
to make or buy a conical mount.

Thanks,

yes they gave the info to me years ago and I can't find where I wrote it
down. If I remember correctly the thrust line was 2 degrees right and 0
degrees down. The mount needs to be as short a practical for weight and
balance.
