Charlie... I've never got the originals back in since the paint job in 1995
!!

I've had the same 8 pins in since. Go to a welding supply house and get a
dozen 0.063 stainless TIG filler rods.

Hello All

In reference to the Rebels "4 door metal cowl". Is there anything short of
normal wear and tear that will reduce the force and difficulty required to
thread the hinge pins in and out to open/close the cowl doors. I thought I
read that using a smaller dia. hinge pin would help?

Hi Charlie

I just recently found that apply silicone spray to the hine pin will help
this alot. it works better then oil because it will not wick out and end up
on your windscreen and make you think you have an oil leak.

Have a good one

Wayne
I thought I had read to use a smaller wire somewhere. I guess it was one of
your replies to another builder. I happen to have some .062 steel rod (soft)
and it worked a lot better. Do you recommend a SS alloy type that is more
rigid then the other SS types ?

C.W. Boekhorst
I am sure the silicone works better but I have not painted my Rebel and
would not like to take the risk at this time.

Mtutt
I have been using the drill up to now but I have heard that eventually the
hinge rod may get loose and I will have to bend a hook on the end to keep
the rod from vibrating forward in too the prop.

Thanks Guys for all the good replies.

The SS bends pretty easy and gets out of shape.. but so far in 15+ years of
putting those pins in and out I haven't had one break. Straighten it out and
put it back in. The little "wiggles" help take the slop out of the
clearance!! LOL

Charlie

Finding away to secure the hine pin is important. im my 12 years in aircraft
maintenance i have seen hine pins that were nearly impossibly to install
vibrate out.

the slickest instlalation i have seen is making the pin slighly shorter then
the hinge and drilling the hing and placing a small cotter pin or lockwire
through the hole.

I finally got back to working on my Rebel today its been too long.

Post by Dick Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:50 pm

The RV people sell a pin with a welded "tab" on one end $6 to 8 each at
VANS. I added a nut plate into the cowl attach points and use a screw to
hold it in place, easy, sanitary, effective. Or just bend a "U" on the end
then the hut plate and screw.
