[rebel-builders] RE: Tail pipe sport

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:43 pm

On my first engine, the 320, the tail pipes were smaller with no ball
joints, so had them attached directly to the engine. On my new 360, I have
larger tail pipes with ball joints, so have them attached to the bottom edge
of the firewall with flexible supports.

Charlie,

Others with 'hands-on' experience will chime in, I'm sure, but everything
I've
read suggests the most significant vibrations occur during engine start-up,
where the engine significantly rocks around on it's mount. Thus, it would
make the most sense to me to tie the exhaust stack to the engine if at all
possible. In fact, I was also under the impression that they are better off

unsupported than incorrectly supported by a structure in isolation from the
engine (unless, of course, you have included spring-loaded spherical ball
joint
(s) in the exhaust system).

I did both:) I have supports from sump bolts to the pipes that are Vans style stainless tubing with rubber hose, and also from the engine mount structure to the pipes that are a loop of 1/8 cable attached with adel clamps. Is working well now for 45 hours.

Thanks for all of your comments on the "Tail Pipe Support". I neglected to
mention I do have the spherical ball joints on my exhaust system and had
originally planed to support them from the lower edge of the firewall.
Yesterday I looked at Vetterman's web site hoping to see his engine too tail
pipe support design but was unsuccessful. If anyone has a photo or can point
me to a source I would appreciate it. Walter I would also be interested in
seeing your "Flexible Supports" if you have a photo. Thanks again for the
help.

[rebel-builders] RE: Tail pipe sport

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:43 pm

I got my support kit from Vetterman. If you search around on the van's forum you will find lots of pics and info. The way he designed it it's supposed to have a horizontal support that ties the two pipes together but the vans pipes are much closer together than the Murphy and at least on mine it would have been tricky to make that work so that's why I added the supports to the engine mount.

I should add that I have had some slippage where the rubber hose clamps onto the stainless tubes. I would recommend double hose clamps or flaring the end of the tubes slightly.

Post by rick greenwood » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:43 pm

Hello Charlie:
I am forwarding pictures of how I made my tail pipe supports. I haven't flown it yet but I had a couple of engine start ups and had no problems so far.
I used an eye bolt for the top throught the firewall through a bracket for support. Used 3/8 steel tubing. Used torches to heat ends and flattened them then drilled.
I used 3/8 fuel line with a 1/2 inch space between the tubings in the fuel line and tubing flared slightly for extra grip. I also have the spherical ball joint like you.

I just come up with this idea and I hope it helps

Hello Charlie:
I am forwarding pictures of how I made my tail pipe supports. I haven't
flown it yet but I had a couple of engine start ups and had no problems so
far.
I used an eye bolt for the top throught the firewall through a bracket for
support. Used 3/8 steel tubing. Used torches to heat ends and flattened
them then drilled.
I used 3/8 fuel line with a 1/2 inch space between the tubings in the fuel
line and tubing flared slightly for extra grip. I also have the spherical
ball joint like you.

I just come up with this idea and I hope it helps

Mike ,Rob, Jesse & Walter
Thanks for all of your comments on the "Tail Pipe Support". I neglected
to
mention I do have the spherical ball joints on my exhaust system and had
originally planed to support them from the lower edge of the firewall.
Yesterday I looked at Vetterman's web site hoping to see his engine too
tail
pipe support design but was unsuccessful. If anyone has a photo or can
point
me to a source I would appreciate it. Walter I would also be interested
in
seeing your "Flexible Supports" if you have a photo. Thanks again for the
help.

You want the exhaust shaking with the engine or it will die an early death.
I thought I made mention or uploaded pics of the nice easy hangers on the
rebuild I did last spring. They are attached to the lower engine mount bolts
to suspend the exhaust pipes. I'll find them and fwd them to you Charlie.

Hello Wayne

Thanks for the photo of your exhaust hangers. Mike Holloway advised me the
other day of your photo posting. I found it on the Rebel net but the photo I
down loaded was not as clear as the one you just sent. I will assume the
tubing can be 3/8 aluminum or steel and 303 med pressure hose? I could not
make out any cross bracing between the two supports tubes (one for each tail
pipe) but assume (again) that they must exist. With only 4" between the
carburetor and the firewall, space may be a little limited for the cross
brace but we will see. Thanks again for the help.

Yes, side to side joiner.. same deal.. 3/8th tubes with a crimped end
clamped to the exhaust pipes with worm clamps and a rubber joiner. I'll find
a picture! Hose.. any you have handy.. it's just to make up for misalignment
and expansion.

I don't think the the joiner is absolutely necessary.. the supports hang
darn near straight down to pick up each exhaust pipe to stop the usual
crack/breakage at each exhaust stack from vibration/g loading... but if you
can get them in, why not!

As for alum or steel. My preference would be steel for easy of flattening an
end for the exhaust end and welding a tab for the mmount end.
