[rebel-builders] Deburring Technique

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:35 pm

Use a flat file. First run the edge at a slight angle to the metal to get
the majority of burr off. Then run the file flat, holding it flat with
several fingers on the stringer in this case, along the metal. Finally, if
you really want to be perfect, you can use a piece of 3M # 7447 scotch pad
along the surface.

Today, I spent quite a bit of time working to debur the six stringers on the
SR2500 Horizontal Stab. Drilling through the skin and into the stringer in
many cases left a significant burr on the inside of the stringer. I found
this difficult to get at with my trusty drill bit (too thick), and it didn't
respond well to a standard deburring tool from the outside of the stringer.
Does anyone have a good technique or discovered a relatively easy way to
debur these pieces? I ended up using a smaller drill bit but found it
difficult to twist, especially with the arthritis in my right hand.

Thanks,

Jerry Folkerts

[rebel-builders] Deburring Technique

Hi Jerald,

I used a dremel tool with a wide, flat cutoff disk. I held the dremel with the disk flat to the underside of the stringer (plane of the cut off disk parallel to the surface of the stringer) and moved along to each hole giving it a quick cut along the face. After I was done with the Dremel, I followed with aluminium oxide sand paper, and then a red abrasive pad and gave the underside a quick smoothing to remove any surface marring.

Jerald, Wicks Aircraft www.wicksaircraft.com The 2010 catalog page 179
shows several tools for the job.

Burraway Tool, good for those hard to get to holes is made in several sizes.
Chuck it into a drill slow turning is best, when inserted a triangled blade
retracts as it goes into the hole, pull back slightly and it will deburr the
back side of the hole. It's worth the price when you have a number of holes
to do.

Several others on the top of the same page work well for their specific
application.

Good luck,

Dick Wampach SR-108 N331RW

Hi Jerry: it helps to be patient; drill with less force into the material
and use a sharp drill bit, then you'll have less of a burr. Also, start with
a smaller sharp drill bit and work into a larger and final drill bit.
Regards, Eduardo
