[rebel-builders] V-8

Post by Dick Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:07 pm

Ray Watson

About 3 years ago I saw a beautiful V-8 Chevy set up in a running mock-up
with a constant speed prop. I was drooling over it. It was supposed to fit
in a Murphy Lyc cowl. You might find it helpful to check in with Bud at the
address below. His set up was complete with motor mount ready to bolt on.
Supply your own Prop and Governor, hook it up and run it. The gear box
looks bullet-proof & his design eliminates any harmonics.

Hi Ray: Your address appears (apparently correct by its spelling) in your

to contact Mr. Jason Day from Vesta V8 (vestav8.com), but his page does not

Thanks for the feedback Dick. I already have the engine, mount, gearbox and prop assemblies......so it is a matter of finding a cowling set up that will work with my configuration. I will check on the Murphy Lyc. cowling and see if that may work for my application, as well as touch base with Bud.

Thanks much!......Ray.

ello Rebel builders. I am new to the group, having recently purchased a
uper Rebel, which has since been completely disassembled and is now headed
n the direction of becoming a Moose. I appreciate being able to monitor
he ongoing conversations that are of interest in a number of areas.
As a part of my Moose conversion, I am looking for a source for a well
esigned fiberglass cowling for the V8 application that I will install in my
ircraft. Would appreciate any direction to good sources and feedback that
ny of you have to offer.
I am not sure if my email address is displayed since I may be being Bcc'd on

[rebel-builders] V-8

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:07 pm

Don't take the statement "eliminates all harmonics" to the bank as the
physics do not support the statement. He does have a clutch that
eliminates airframe vibration during startup and shutdown but that means
little. The statement could well be true but Bud hasn't done the testing
to know for sure IMO.

OTOH for the specific case of that V8 and with the same prop with a
demonstrated life in service I would be happy to fly his set up. Likely
safer than what I'm flying but by no means would I consider it risk free
or guaranteed against resonant torsionals or fatigue. My current project
is an attempt to measure some of the numbers that are required for
certifying engine propeller combinations. I rather like the quote "If
you are not scared of torsional resonance - learn more until you are".
The EPI website is a good place to start. Even with 400 hours and
mathematical modeling I do not know with certainty the torsional
resonant frequencies of my soob. Neither does any one else! It is still
an experiment in progress. All I really know is that I don't cruise at a
particularly dangerous rpm. Change the propeller and I don't even know
that anymore.

[rebel-builders] V-8

Steve Bowley in Phoenix built a V8 Moose 5-6 years ago. It’s apparently very nice. I had an email dialog with him back in September of 2006 and he was very receptive of sharing his experience. You may want to look him up (I have his contact info if you want to email me directly). Of course, Bob P. also was testing the Robinson V8, so I’m sure you can get some info on that as well.

Dick Wampach

[rebel-builders] V-8

Post by Dick Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:07 pm

Thanks Ken,
I did not go into engineering details, My biggest concern when I first saw
his system was to ask him about harmonics, Prop combinations etc, almost to
the point of ruffling his feathers. I did not want to offend him, but he
did assure me......
So with this posting and as all other ideas, opinions, suggestions, leads,
hunches, concepts etc..... Buy, accept, steal, borrow, beg, invent, or
incorporate any of the ideas at your own risk. Always do your research and
feel comfortable with it. You know the old saying BUYER BE WARE!

That said; had I not saved an O-540 and Prop from an engine change on a
Cessna 182RG (my cost $4,000), that I performed way back when, I would have
gladly bought Bud's package. So that is my opinion on his Corvette 350 HP
engine

Enough said on that subject for now. Thanks to all for the many ideas
shared on this site. Thanks to Mike for being the host!
