[rebel-builders] dynafocal engine mounts-side load??

Post by snowyrvr » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Mine didn't pull together straight until they were starting to get pretty snug. There's some movement in the mount arms which helps when bolting it all together. I don't think I could have gotten the eng on the mount while it was still on the firewall. Your mounts are different than mine. Even though I'm using the 0360, I thought I'd seen builders on the site with an 0320 who used the same ones I did..they were Lords but the # was something with a 150 in it. Also, mount bolts are 11/16", not 5/8". The pilot side upper bolt was a real B**#@@@!! Good Luck! Craig

I'm hanging the engine tomorrow, and I decided to take the mount off the firewall to see how it's going to line up. Glad I did because it would be a real bear to get the engine in the mount with it on the firewall. I did manage to get all the bolts through the mounts and engine case, with some force. I haven't tightened them yet because I don't have a 5/8 box wrench which will hopefully fit into all the tight places it will need to go to get on the nuts. Anyway, with everything in place there is significant side loading on all 4 of the rubber mounts (I have Lord J-7402-24) displacing the rubber maybe 3/16 to 1/4" per mount. Hopefully this will decrease some after torquing because as the mount rings get closer to the engine case the alignment improves. I sure don't think much of that side load will disappear though. It doesn't seem right to me. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks.
Jesse

[rebel-builders] dynafocal engine mounts-side load??

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Thanks Craig,
Yeah, I'm wondering if I needed to get thinner mounts so the geometry would be better. I got the part number directly from Lord based on the engine and the inside dia of the mount rings. I didn't even consider that there might be differences in the thickness with different part #s and how that would effect the geometry of the whole assembly. Oh well, I'll torque it down and see what happens. I don't know about this dynafocal thing; parallel bolts would be a lot easier to deal with. My bolts are 7/16 which needs a 5/8 wrench. I'm thinking the only practical way to torque the assembly is to hold the nut and turn the bolt?

[rebel-builders] dynafocal engine mounts-side load??

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Jesse, when I installed the dynofocal mounts on my 360, I had a real tough time. But once tightened up and hanging on the firewall, seemed to be OK. Should be in the archives if you want to read about it.

I mounted my cowl so the prop/spinner was about 1/4 higher initially, and after about 100 hours settled down to be centered perfectly.

[rebel-builders] dynafocal engine mounts-side load??

Post by Charlie Eubanks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi Jess
Don't know if this will help are add to the confusion. I have Murphy's
Dynafocal mount and I ordered Barry mounts for my engine #94150-40. They
required AN7 bolts, and I used MS21042-7 all metal nuts. Requires a 5/8
wrench on the bolt and a 1/2" on the nuts. No problem installing. You might
check cross ref number with Lord.

[rebel-builders] dynafocal engine mounts-side load??

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

That would be 11/16 wrench on the nuts...

.. Jesse I'd be doing it with the mount attached to the airplane! Install
the bottom ones first and get them pulled in a bit and let the weight of the
engine help you get the top ones in easier.

Also.. the bottom bolts that go in the lord mounts.... the best exhaust
hangers I've seen to date get attached to these and need to go on the bolt
before it's installed to the mounts. This allows the exhaust to move around
with the engine and makes for a clean install.

I've sent you a picture directly.. I'll try to remember to upload to the
gallery later.
