Hi Jesse !

i open my bottom doors every oil change ! i have a quick drain
valve on the oil tank, and a tube running from it to the rear,
fastened to the bottom of the fuselage aft of the firewall.
The tube means I don't have to carry or fool with a hose
for oil changes.

The 4 door cowl is THE best way to go ! Birds can build
nests while you have lunch - just pull the wire out, and
have a peek, and check the oil while you're there !!

Jesse build it with 4 easily opened doors and you will maintain that
engine like a top. Make the access any more difficult and the
pre-flight, "curiosity inspections", etc come to a halt. Amazing what
gets neglected behind the two piece speed cowling and it's numerous
screws/camlocks or what ever means you hold it on with, it's just not
convenient (especially at a dock!)

[rebel-builders] prop spacer with nosebowl cowl?

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Don't know about others but with latches on my top two doors, they both
get opened at least once every day it flies and often more than once. I
don't have a separate oil door but then the soob doesn't burn oil. The
Piper Commanche latches came from ebay and it was a bit of effort to
re-inforce the doors to mount them but I'm glad I did. New Latches are
ridiculously expensive so it may be worth checking around for used ones.
I could not find a commercial equivalent.

My bottom two doors are small and have the piano wire fastening method
and you are correct, those rarely get opened.

Cool, that's the first one I've seen with a one piece bottom like that.
.032 seems like it would be pretty hard to work with, and I don't have a
roller either. Guess I might need to use one for the side panels...even
with .025?

Thanks Joe,
I have looked at Roger's wedsite quite a bit and his pictures on the cowling are great. I just wasn't sure about about a prop spacer because he used a smaller Continental and I have a Lyc O-320. It has been a very helpful resource over the years though for sure and I highly reccomend it as well.
Ken, That's a good idea using Apache latches, I'll see if I can find some. I was also thinking of using 4 or 5 camlocs. I know some of you really like the piano hinge method, but I'm not enthusiastic about it.

JESSE: I don't know if you have already looked at Roger Hofmann's web site
or not. If not, he has some great pictures on building a 4 door cowl. He
also used the MC-3B nose bowl from Spruce. If you need a cooling air opening
you could use the MC-3C nose bowl. Go to:

Hope this helps.

[rebel-builders] prop spacer with nosebowl cowl?

Post by Jones, Michael » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi jesse

I have the 4 door with 0-320 and mc-3b nose bowl
Yes it works but it makes things very tight under my cowl,
Clearance from fly wheel to nose bowl is very close,
Clearance from nose bowl to cylinders is very close and makes for some
pretty steep angles on the front baffle plates
Also the openings on the nose bowl are so big it makes baffels a really
tigh fit and close to the flywheel again
In fact I have redone the nose bowl opening and made little smaller
based upon the tony bingelis books
I chose to save some money and not use spacer but its a lot of extra
fitting I find to make it all work and I think if I did it again I would
use a spacer

Cheers

mike

[rebel-builders] prop spacer with nosebowl cowl?

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Thanks Mike, well I just ordered my prop and bolts, so I'd have to exchange those for longer ones and get a spacer, but it could be done. I guess I'll get the nose bowl and take a gander at the clearance. Do you have any pictures of your installation? That would be very helpful.
