Riveter Gun Problem

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:35 pm

FWIW, I bought one of those "cheap" air rivet guns, can't even remember where now, but
might have been Canadian Tire, about 8 or 9 years ago. Anyway, this one built my Rebel,
(estimate 25,000 rivets), and to this day still works as good as the day I bought it, as
best I can tell. I have never done any repairs or had it apart, other than the head the
odd time, when a mandrel got jammed in there. Since new, though, I have always put a drop
or two of "Universal Power" Air Tool Oil in the air intake before I start using it. Don't
know if that made the difference, but that's my experience.

of one by using concrete nails in the dimpler as the nail lasted
forever, unfortunately the jaws didn't. Bought the third as a shinny new
spare. Now back to using cheap nails and replacing as they get too
chewed up or break.

You can get cheap replacement guns for 90 cdn (60 USD) from House of
Tools in Canada or similar shops. However, I have done many tune-ups on
my guns.

Firstly, ensure the tip is set at the correct length. Usually a tool is
supplied that has a guage on the side. Take the nose cover off, butt one
end of the tool against the housing and the inner nose tip should be in
line with the guaged mark. adjust as required. AS I recall, one of my
guns lists 62mm the other 71mm.

Secondly, if not pulling your teeth may be worn out (The guns not your
pearlies). These can be replaced for about 10USD (your Pearlies will
cost more).

Thirdly, if pulling but not enough, you may be low in oil. These guns
use oil for a hydralic action. Remove the large "C" ring from the
bottom. Hold a towel over the bottom and under low pressure, carefully
pull the trigger. (Don't point bottom at bodily parts as I first did
this with it on my lap, Ouch!) the bottom will pop out and inside you'll
find a plunger with a 3/4" or so rod/piston attached. remove this
assembly and in the cavity that the rod was in fill with oil to almost
the top of the cavity. I use good old 10W30. reassemble and test. If too
much oil the nose will not extend far enough forward. If too little it
won't have enough action for pulling.

Good luck.

WALTER
I completely agree with that! All my air tools get 2-6 drops of oil before
each use and if used heavily I'll oil periodically throughout the day. I
still have and use the rivet gun supplied by MAM. Built the Rebel with no
problems other than cleaning the jaws periodically. Also its been used by two
buddies that run stock cars and replace body panels almost every weekend.

FWIW, I have been using the same pneumatic riveter supplied by MAM in 1993.
BLUE in colour, and also available at the "cheap" tool stores that sell
offshore "garbage" wrenches etc. I have pulled <WELL> in excess of 125,000
rivets with it. I have NEVER replaced the grip jaws (or even cleaned them
for that matter) and have been expecting the gun to die on me in the middle
of a proseal job for years (it will now that I said that). Still running
fine (KNOCK ON WOOD), except the diaphram? has been leaking air when the
trigger is held in, for some time now. I'm scared to take it apart, as it
may never work again due to the shock of being serviced for the first time
in 7 1/2 years!

Riveter Gun Problem

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:35 pm

Wayne,

We should all feel sorry foe you, using old beat up equipment, and buy you a
new gun if only for a spare, after all you have done for us want to be plane
mechanic/pilots building our Rebels and Elite. After all, I envisioned you in
this aircraft shop that would rival anything the Yanky Workshop might have to
offer a wood worker. Now that you've blown that image I'll just have to think
of you as one of us!!!

Sorry to bust your "bubble" Bruce!

I am definitely "one of you"! Weeeell maybe I was "one of you",
back when I
was building in my 2 car garage in 1993/4, as after 7+ years of this Rebel
"ADDICTION" I have 3 large roller cabinets full of tools. I can't honestly
say that there was ever a tool, that I needed, that I didn't go
out and buy!
Now in my 1800 Sq Ft work shop, I also have the "niceties" of a 4 foot
pneumatic shear, an 8 foot brake, 2 drill presses, a TIG welder and the
other power necessities (grinder, bandsaw, etc). I also have a lathe
available to use over in my Plastic plants maintenance crib. In
the hanger,
I have a walk behind pallet truck (12 foot lift) that allows me to remove
and install wings by myself and a 50 foot long beam with 2 trolleys/chain
falls for lifting aircraft onto and off of floats. The only thing I have
been looking for lately is a 3 in 1 machine for the shop, but any sold
around here seem to be junk. I may have to settle for a separate
mill and a
small lathe. It sure is a good thing that my wife is one of the
few women I
know of that is not a compulsive spender, because I have always done more
than enough of that for both of us!

Riveter Gun Problem

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:35 pm

Wayne,

Sounds like a nice set up. Maybe I'll get to see it someday! Soon.

I made cabinets for 15 years. I sold the business in 92 but kept one of every
tool and machinery for myself, then built a shop to put it all in, thinking I
couldn't live without it. Then I got the "kit plane fever" and now all that
woodworking machinery got packed in the corner to make room for all the plane
stuff, but I too married a great woman who understands and puts up with my
unusual habits. What a life, ah!
