It's the airplane itself groaning because all you are
doing is taxiing!! It wants to fly! Just kidding, I'm
in a humorus mood today. Congrats on getting as far as
you have.

[rebel-builders] First taxi

G'day Mike

Congratulations of getting your Rebel taxying. I wouldn't worry too much
about the noises as mine has lots of rattles when taxying. Just turn up the
music and it all goes away.

As for the groaning, mine makes a similar noise "groaning" noise which I
found was just the brakes working.

I persisted with the Murphy tail wheel for a long time and despite the good
reports given by some I had nothing but trouble with it. After the tail
wheel stuck and nearly put me through a fence, I threw away the MAM wheel
and replaced it with a Scott wheel. The difference between the wheels is
just amazing. If you don't have a Scott I would recommend investigating the
fitting of one.

Regards and I hope that you are soon flying.

Hi Mike !

Congrats on your progress ! Feels good, doesn't it !! :-)

Don't worry about the tailwheel - they are a bit stiff at first.
It will get better very quickly !

That groaning sound is perfectly normal too - it's just the
brake pads juddering a bit as they skid over the disks. It may
quiet down a bit once they are seated in. (Initially, taxi around
doing donuts, alternating brakes until they are gently warmed ...)

It's normal (and healthy !) to be a bit super-sensitive to
all the new sounds. :-) Don't let it throw you off -
Remember - no matter what - FLY THE AIRPLANE !!

Now - GET IT FLYING !!! :-) :-)

First taxi this evening! Finally getting to operate the plane in motion...
too much fun. I had the tailwheel chain linkage too loose, so most of the
steering was with the brakes and travel was slow.

I slowly inched through some tight turns out the driveway, made the first
official radio call, and was soon on the runway. I taxied to the far end,
running about 1100 RPM, just a tad above Jabiru idle. The brake pads got a
reasonable workout, good for break-in.

Along the way, a few neighbors came out to see what the new noise was, then
clap, cheer and fist pump as they realized Ron's Rebel was finally moving.
The brakes felt very firm and strong from the get go. Temps throughout the
exercise were very good, with the highest CHT at 260F, and oil temp finally
nudging 145F.

Returning to the hangar, swinging the tail around smartly (ta-da!) I
realized some of the neighbors had been following behind, as if 254R was the
Pied Piper. (Living at a small airpark with good neighbors who also build,
fly and love airplanes is heaven.) General merriment followed.

I took a link out of the tailwheel chains, but had some difficulty
restarting the engine for some (probably silly) reason still unknown, and
diagnosis of that will have to wait to tomorrow. Normal speed taxi and
static RPM tests will follow soon.

This is really, really fun already.

Bill Maxwell

[rebel-builders] first taxi

Post by Bill Maxwell » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Well done Ron!

Cant help with the restart problem, given the use of the throttle body.

If it had been the Bing carbie, my question would have been whether the
attempted restart involved use of the choke. If it is like its smaller,
Bing-equipped, sister in my Jodel D18, they dont like even the vaguest
sniff of choke after they are warm, and equally only like the throttle
barely cracked on starting, even from cold.

I have problems getting the oil temperature up to the recommended range
using normal and fast taxi RPM, normally only getting it up there after
applying full power for take off and in the climb out. Thereafter it is
fine. We have the air intake for the cooler reduced to about as small a
size as I am comfortable with, so now I just regard the low oil temp on
ground manouevring to be a normal feature of the breed. Actually, this
reminds me to ask some of the local Jabiru airframe jockies about their
oil temperature experiences, since we have a couple now local to the
hangar and in our club.

cheers

Bill

Thanks all.

The carb currently is an AeroCarb, throttle body. Will look into the engine
start issue today. It's a first, though probably nothing significant.

I may be flying by Arlington, but if so will still be in 40-hr. test fly off
period, so flying there is unlikely, unless my test flight area is 50 NM in
dia., also not likely.

[rebel-builders] first taxi

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:24 pm

Thanks, Roland. Will try to keep a moderate flow of news, hoping to inspire
other builders just a little, as many have done for me.

There's been quite a change in outlook over the last 2 months, since getting
the windshield and control cables done, and the engine started. At last,
there's no doubt I'll finish, the remaining tasks are no longer daunting,
even fun, and some pieces of those huge piles of delayed gratification are
starting to flow back. (Whoa! What's this?)

There is (suddenly) a different perspective when things change from a
multi-year grind to where you can count the stuff remaining on two hands,
then one, and almost reach out and touch the finish line. After all those
times you thought you were closing in on the finish line turned out to be
mirages, but not this time. When the internal debates become things like
whether you really need to still be so picky about the last doubler (you
do), whether some of the stuff you always thought needed to be done before
flying really does (it doesn't), and whether you are at the "two weeks out"
stage ready to schedule the inspection. Not quite there yet, but expect to
be soon.

It's even oddly (for me) calm, no hurry, no worry. At least, until I
discovered the #$@%& brakes need to be rebuilt. AWWK!! ALL HANDS ON DECK!!
:)

The latest greatest (excruciating) detail is always at http://n254mr.com,
where I'll post some video of the first taxi sometime later today.

Ron,

First, congrats on your taxi! For your test flight area, you might try
marking off on an old sectional the area you'd "like" to have for when you
have your inspection done. It will all depend on your inspector, but they
have the leeway to give you what ever test area they want. On my last one I
received a test area that exceeded the range of the airplane to the edge and
back! I just took a highlighter and marked off the entire area I wanted,
and the inspector accepted it as is. He just made a copy of my map and put
it in his file.

marking off on an old sectional the area you'd "like" to have for when you
have your inspection done. It will all depend on your inspector, but they
have the leeway to give you what ever test area they want. On my last one
I
received a test area that exceeded the range of the airplane to the edge
and
back! I just took a highlighter and marked off the entire area I wanted,
and the inspector accepted it as is. He just made a copy of my map and
put
it in his file.
