[rebel-builders] sikaflex or proseal for floats

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Hi Gary
Ease of use and cost favor sikkaflex 1A. There are equivalent marine
products but they are 3 times more expensive in my part of the world. In
theory this stuff is not impervious to leaked hydraulic fluid but the
marine guys say that is a non issue. Working time is a consideration if
building the floats but again the sikkaflex tends to be better than the
2 hour proseal. I found the clean up on exterior surfaces also tended to
be a bit easier with the sikkaflex compared to proseal.
Both products need adequate ventilation but I don't know if either one
is safer than the other in that regard. Proseal was shipped with my
floats in 1997 and it is still in my freezer but I decided not to use
it. Proseal does adhere better IMO.

floats under construction. Some of the joints I have taken apart appear
to have been assembled with proseal. Since the fuel resistance of
proseal is not necessary in this application, what other considerations
are there in choosing either of these or perhaps something else?

Craig,
I believe Wayne sells a set of CD construction photos/instructions. I have been meaning to get one but as typical in life......I put things off due to other more important issues. :)

Thanks Ken. What stores carry Sikaflex in your part of the country. I
seem to only be able to get it on the coast around Walter's place. No
one seems to even know about it in Calgary.

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Interesting. I checked with United and the only store that carries and
sells this is in Barrie, Ont which I presume is where you get yours.
They might be talked into bringing it in but with the aging issue and
no demand here they might not. Ellsworth Adhesives sells it in Canada
and will ship. Am checking that angle out now. I'll try the 'limestone'.

Garry
I got some from Barry Jays Marine in Edmonton. Try the marine dealers
around Calgary. Some of them bring in the small squeeze tubes which almost
cost as much as the 300 ml caulking tubes which is a real piss off.

[rebel-builders] sikaflex or proseal for floats

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

I went on the hunt here for this a couple of years ago with no luck at
all. First marine outfit I called said 'Yeah sure - I've got white and
black' - go figure. Thanks all.

I got some from Barry Jays Marine in Edmonton. Try the marine dealers
around Calgary. Some of them bring in the small squeeze tubes which almost
cost as much as the 300 ml caulking tubes which is a real piss off.
