What make/model gas struts? How long are they open and how long closed?

[rebel-builders] Moose Gull Wing doors

Post by robert@montanasky.us » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Identified the bracket mounting locations at the door. I measured the
length of
the extended strut, and then fully compressed the strut and measured the
length.
With the door tied to the desired full-open position I wanted (horizontal),
I
marked initial bracket locations with the strut in place starting with the
bottom of the gas strut mount where the bottom of the instrument panel
rivets to
the door opening. Then with the door closed, I checked that the distance
between these two marked points did not get less then the compressed
distance
plus 1/4" (I used a cut piece of dowel wood) during the closing of the door
...
with this closed distance plus 1/4" being my target. Had to remark the
locations a few times before I was confident I got the full open I wanted,
and
the fully closed plus 1/4" distance as the doors rotated down and closed.
This
process worked for me, as the doors now open to full horizontal, and snap
closed
(go over center) when the door is almost closed.

Cheers, Bob 612e

[rebel-builders] Moose Gull Wing doors

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Thanks for the detailed description Bob. That's basically the same approach
I took also. I'll have to look at/measure the distances on mine. I got my
struts from Austin Hardware. If they are the same make/model/distances I
would be happy to take measurements for anyone.

Ted
