[rebel-builders] Moose Windshield 'V' brace

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

I thought it was a standard kit part. I have one under the bench for SR017.
Not sure if it came with the kit (I think it did) or was part of the Moose
upgrade kit purchased years later. In any event, it's been found that the
light tube and ends (like the one I have under the bench) has been known to
break.

After getting no response from Murphy I thought I would send the question
out to the folks that will know.
I found only 1 mention of a windshield 'V' brace for a Moose; in the
service bulletin for the front wing attachment modification. It stated to
leave 2 holes on each side for the 'V' brace attachment points. No mention
in the manual that I could find.
I flew the factory demonstrator with Bob many years ago. I don't remember
it having the brace. Dicussing the point with other pilots it was said
that it may only be needed if the plane is put on floats.
If, indeed, the 'V' brace is needed is there a source for them?

Thanx in advance for your replies.

[rebel-builders] Moose Windshield 'V' brace

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Dale Fultz originally came up with a design out of 4130 which Bob Scheuber
and I copied for our Moose. I posted pictures in the archives as did Dale.
I'd be happy to send more pictures to anyone and to post the raw stock part
#'s for the 4130 that I purchased from Aircraft Spruce if anyone wants that
information.

[rebel-builders] Moose Windshield 'V' brace

Post by Tim Saxton » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Hi Ted,

I would like more pics and information. I have the original brace and was
going to look at beefing it up but it might be better to just replace it
with a more robust design.

Thanks,
Tim

I uploaded a number of pictures of the upgraded Moose V-brace to section 124
Modifications. I don't have one from the cabin side (inside) showing how I
tied the new top engine mount to both the firewall and the horizontal 'C'
channel FUS-386 that you can see on the forward, outside the cabin, side.
But one of the pictures does show the #6 rivets and #3-x bolts that go thru
the FUS-386 channel, firewall and custom mount. The main point is that the
key structure, FUS-386, is now tied into the V-brace.

I added one picture that Dale Fultz sent me--it is the picture with the
dimensions. In Dale's version of the new V-brace, he added a spreader bar.
Bob Scheuber and I discussed this and decided not to add that to the
structure, as we didn't think it was necessary since the side-to-side
strength given the wing mount tube is already strong enough. But, that's
just my non-engineer opinion.

Here is the parts list (I think I ordered enough at the time for two V-brace
set ups):

[rebel-builders] Moose Windshield 'V' brace

Post by Rick Muller » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

I got mine from Murphy. I recall others having issues with the Murphy model
fracturing where it attaches up at the wing. Murphy indicated it is a good
idea for "heavy" engines, i.e. Auto or M-14. You might consider getting a
local welding shop to make you one. Murphy charged me $150 I think. I am
guessing a good welding shop can do it for less.
