Jason, If you are talking drilling thin steel (or any thin material) I find that these cutters are a worthwhile investment.

Folks,

I am having a heck of a time drilling large diameter holes in the seat frames (which I think are 4130?). Drilling #30 and #40 holes is a cinch. However, I am buggering up my drill bits drilling 1/4 inch and larger diameter holes. I am using generic 'high speed' cobalt drill bits.

I have tried also drilling the holes out in stages as well, with no luck.

Any suggestions of the best practices to drill larger diameter holes in steel? Speed? Should I use cutting fluid? etc?

Thanks, -Jason

My favorite tool for larger holes is a step bit... keeps the holes nice and
round.

Hi Jason
I use reamers and lots of cutting or oil if thats all I have. Works just
fine with nice clean hole.

I would have to agree with Ralph. Most people run their drill bits (all
cutting tools) to fast when machining 4130 and stainless steel. Sharp tools
and coolant really help but the right speed is paramount. As a rule of thumb
I use a cutting speed of 50 ft. / minute. As an example; a

Use two drills, a pilot and the final size. Drill the pilot hole a little
bigger than the web* of the final drill, use cutting oil, then drill to
final size, use a variable speed drill on a slow RPM, and let the drill cut
by itself with out using a lot of force, ease off force when drill is about
to break through or it will catch and rip you wrist off. If the drill dulls
replace it or sharpen it. Don't let the metal get hot, I believe it may
harden. Go slow and steady.

*If you look at the drill point head on the web is the small center portion
thats about 45 degrees off the cutting edges.

Folks,

Thanks all for your advice. Looks like my main problem has been speed. I have been drilling WAY TOO FAST!
