[rebel-builders] Windshield install with Bostick - DON'T !

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm

I was interested in the Bostick 1100 for use between the bottom of the front
fiberglass retainer and the fuse. I don't want water getting back under the
fiberglass retainer -- which requires sealant coverage of at least the front
edge of the bottom of the retainer. I'm not keen to use butyl tape sealant
there because I don't want black goo oozing out of the junction between the
front of retainer and fuse on a hot day -- where everything will be white.

I do plan on using butyl tape sealant between the fiberglass retainer and
the windshield itself, and under the sides and top, so even if the Bostick
1100 _is_ tough to remove, it would only be a problem if I had to take the
whole front retainer off the fuse.

If I'm following this thread correctly, although the butyl rubber sealant
tape method is a "known good" material and solution, except for occasional
oozing, we don't have a lot of empirical evidence about how removable the
Bostick 1100 is. Time for some experiments.

[rebel-builders] Windshield install with Bostick - DON'T !

Wayne's sealant does sound like urethane adhesive and removing that
stuff is best done with explosives. I would expect it to lead to a
cracked windshield even in normal use.

Used sparingly there is nothing wrong with using silicone sealant on
acrylic in places where oozing might be an eyesore Ron but it does
restrict movement or floating of the windshield. However for the most
part I just wrapped 1" wide foam tape (from LP plastics) around the edge
to get a half inch on the inside and a half inch on the outside. That
did leak a bit along the bottom but a tiny bit of clear silicone sealant
on the outside seems to have fixed that. I use lots of silicone on
acrylic elsewhere but the thermal expansion rate of acrylic is so high
that it can be difficult to get a permanent seal against aluminum unless
you have a very wide gap. Nevertheless I needed something along the
inside bottom of the windshield so I ran a thick bead of silicone across
there. I would do the same if I ever need to replace my windshield. I
have no experience with the Bostick 1100.

I was thinking that my windshield was showing some crazing when flying
into the sun but the Plexus polish seems to have cleaned that up and it
is now my favorite windshield polish.

Butyl strip sealant is also vailable from Aircraft Spruce for anybody
that wants to go that route.
