[rebel-builders] Scott 2000 tail wheel

Post by N.Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:58 pm

Hi Charlie

I've recently come across this as a possible option

http://www.irondesign-airparts.com/tailwheels.htm

Can't vouch for it on an Elite or Rebel but might be worth a look ?

Subject: [rebel-builders] Scott 2000 tail wheel

Hello All

I have looked through the very extensive archives about tail wheels and I
still have a question. Consider the following. I plan to certify my Rebel at

1320 Lbs. and have an old Scott 2000 (6" hard rubber tire) tail wheel off my

Luscombe which I replaced with a new trouble free Scott 2000 15 +years ago,
Today the Scott wheels are hard to fine and are so expensive, I intend to
make the necessary parts and put it back in to service. If I install a steel

spring and the "rebuilt" Scott wheel, it will weigh 8.2 Lbs. or about 2.2
Lbs more then the Rebel wheel & spring that came with my kit. It's not a
fork type tail wheel but is there any reason why this wheel wouldn't work on

the Rebel? Is there anybody who has had success/failure with this wheel on
their Rebel I sure would like to hear from you.

[rebel-builders] Scott 2000 tail wheel

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:58 pm

I had a rear fuselage failure on the left side when I required the Scott
2000 (old number 24B) to jump about a 1 1/2" pavement edge. Partly
because of its small diameter, partly because it is hard and partly
because the fuse did not have one of the later reinforcements in the
tail end, I got a couple of wrinkles in the tailcone which were a lot
harder to fix than they are to make up initially. Keep away from little
jumps and it will likely be okay. I think the hard wheels have been
largely successful for most people but not in this case. A common
comment is that the pneumatic tire is a good deal more pleasant to taxi
with and I would second that. I sold my 24B and got the 3200.

[rebel-builders] Scott 2000 tail wheel

Charlie,

FWIW, I have the Iron Designs tailwheel on a modified Champ spring. It's
very high quality workmanship. I can't say much about how it works yet
though, because the longest I've run it at one time so far is about 8 ft. --
pushing by hand. :) Hopefully, that statistic will get longer before too
long.

You may recall I am going for 1320 Lbs. Just got Scotts reply. The Iron
Design is a nice looking product but it's 4-3/4 Lbs. heaver then the what
came with the kit. Thanks for the help.

Garry
Thanks for telling me of your experience. I am afraid at 1320 GW the extra
4-3/4 Lbs.of the 3200 way back there would be to much. I have had good
success with the Scott 2000 on my Luscombe, maybe I could retrofit a
pneumatic tire for it.

There's nothing wrong with the murphy tailwheel other than the solid tire.
Since you're OK with a solid tire why not just use the MAM tailwheel and
save 2.2lbs. If you don't like it after flying for a while it's not
something that would be difficult to change later.

You can also build it yourself from plans by Bob Barrows. That's what I did
and it's a good strong tailwheel but it's not light.
