[rebel-builders] Moose: Rudder attach idea: rod-end bearings

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:49 pm

It'll work great untill the heim siezes up then it will rotate on the bolt.
I work in a mine and get to see it happen way to often.

It is a standard Van's set-up. Every RV out there has the same
setup. The bolt should not move if properly installed. The hinge
flanges are tight against the ball in the heim joint. The only thing
that should be moving is the ball/heim joint itself.....

Good eye on the bolts in the picture Drew. I didn't notice it
myself until
yesterday when I was sharpening up the pictures in Photoshop. I'll
have to
ask the A&P that did the plane for this guy why he didn't use drilled
bolts/castle nuts.

Hi Ted Just checked the pictures and I thought I'd add most Canadian
inspectors will insist on drilled bolts and castle nuts anywhere that
there's a posibility of the bolt turning.

Posted two pictures to area "103 - S/M-Rudder" showing rod end

bearings used by a friend on his Harmon Rocket. Might be able to
accomplish
a similar installation on the Moose/Super Rebel/Rebel rudder.

Parts can be had from Aircraft Spruce (search on "bearing" and
you'll get a
whole page of options).

Also RBC Aerospace Bearings (phone: 866-722-2376) out of Washington
has the
same parts, albeit less expensive, than Aircraft Spruce. Website:
http://rbcbearings.com/bbre-aerospace/index.htm

Part # is MS21151 for external thread version & part # MS21153 for
internal
thread version.
